Today I actually did something

Not that I really have anything to show for it, but today I actually worked on a Doctor Who costume.... that isn't mine ^^;
Robyn's Rose Tyler shirt needed mending, so I did that today. Basically what happened is that she put it through the wash and the little crown I had drawn (it was the Tooth and Claw shirt) completely washed off, so I went to her house today armed with a blue fabric marker so I could draw it back on. It actually looks better this time, funnily enough!

Hmmm.. maybe I'll use this post as some background as to why I'm doing this:

When I was four years old is when my father first showed me Doctor Who. My father was born in Scotland and grew up watching it, and he wanted to share it with me. My mom thought it might scare me, but I loved it. My father started me with the Fourth Doctor, who had been his favorite and of course became mine. He passed away later that year though, sadly enough. Doctor Who took on a slightly different meaning as I grew older now. It was my way of bonding with him even now that he was gone.
I got into cosplay at age 13. My sister got me into it, being the spectacular costumer that she is. However, I stuck to anime and video games for years. I did a Lord of the Rings costume once (Arwen), and I was a Jedi for Halloween a few times, but never anything from Doctor Who. I mean, I wanted to, but at this time the new series hadn't come out yet, and the only character I wanted to be was the Doctor, and at age 15 and 16... well I wasn't exactly old enough to pull any Doctor off, let's just sort of leave it at that. Looking back there are various characters I could of done, and I was definitely small enough to stuff myself into a Dalek build, but hey... I was single minded!
When David Tennant became the Tenth Doctor, he instantly became my second favorite Doctor (Tom Baker still holds that special spot though of being my Doctor). Now a lot of people told me I sort of looked like David Tennant, but I didn't really believe them, and a Doctor Who costume still looked like a far off dream.
Then it happened. I was browsing cosplay.com, sort of looking for a new costume when I decided what the heck, I'll post on the Suggestions Chain Thread. I was suggested the Tenth Doctor.
That was what got the wheels turning, but it was a couple months before they actually began to spin at a decent tilt, and after being prodded by Robyn I went for it. I rummaged through my closet and pulled out a suit that I happened to have, and an ancient tan trench coat, pomaded the crap out of my hair, put on a pair of trainers and headed down to my local Dollar General to buy some milk. Robyn came with me and took pictures. This was the result:

Now convinced that I could actually pull off a Doctor, my dream finally somewhat attainable, I started work. I enthusiastically bought some suiting fabric that was the wrong color (it was blue with white pinstripes, if I were going for blue, it would have needed red pinstripes!), and that I ended up having not enough of, so I had to buy ANOTHER fabric to match it (which ended up being a problem of its own, as I'll explain later). There was also the issue of the trench coat. As you can see of the one pictured above, it was a perfect color but... the lapels weren't quite so perfect. I had my sister send me my old rain coat which I had remembered being much more accurate, but turned out to be too light, have a back yoke and numerous belts I did not need. I removed all of this and sort of added a fake vent in the back and figured it'd be okay for then. I also sewed up the suit, bought a wig and some new converse, and picked out my dad's favorite tie.
I was ready to bring the Doctor to a convention, that convention being Ikkicon. It worked out pretty well! The Doctor was very well received, especially by the ladies (oh Doctor, wouldn't you be thrilled), the convention coincided with the American release of The End of Time, Part II, so it was sort of like my own special send off for Ten, and me and my Donna won Best Walk On at the masquerade.

Yeah, that's me... using the sonic screwdriver to mess with the escalators. XD
Also at this convention is when I realized that since the fabric for the pants of my suit was different that that of the jacket, only the pinstripes on the pants actually showed up in photos.
Basically immediately after returning from this con is when I decided that I definitely needed to revamp this costume, to do the Doctor, and in turn my father, proud.

So here I am with a load of microsuede and suiting, just waiting to get a move on. XD
