I don't know where else to unload this
I don't give a shit when some rando says they don't care about politics. But when someone I love and respect says they don't want to it, I feel like I just got slapped. Ally is a VERB. If white people want to not engage with politics, for any reason, that's their prerogative. But as a brown person, it's hard not to see that declaration and think how luxurious that privilege must feel. It's hard to continue to regard that person as an ally.
But if I try to communicate any of that, the hackles come up. The defensiveness comes out. Yes, you take politics seriously, but you boasting about how you get the luxury of scrolling right past it or blocking people like me who are literally BEGGING for white people to give a shit all the time like we are forced to, or at the very least, don't fucking brag about your freedom to "just ignore" or block people that need you to care.
