SGA toons and sketches

SCANNER! WHEE!

*ahem*

So, I've not played with anything in photoshop yet (which was the original reason I wanted the scanner, ironically) but I have uploaded a few of the random SGA sketches and toons I've done. So, I thought I'd share, cause it's 11 at night and I've nothing better to do.

Cut because this is rather image heavy )

Hey, don't sell your life drawing ability short. You've got a good start on the basics and just need to practice. Seriously! You just need more practice. There's this super cool instructional book on how to draw called "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards that will help immensely. Go to a bookstore and grab a copy and keep practicing.

Thanks!
And thanks for the book rec, it's always nice to find new sources of information =) My mother will probably go into shock if she sees me studying up on it. That alone makes it worthwhile ;)

Heeeehehehehee - these are great :D

You've got a good handle on the basics of life drawing, definately - faces are the hardest things to draw, IMO (hands run a close second). Like all drawing, it's all about practice... and with subjects like these to work with *g* ;)

If you're ever after a good drawing anatomy book, I recommend Brian Hogarth's "Dynamic Anatomy" - fantastic stuff :)

Thanks =D

Yeah, my two sticking points for drawing have always been faces and hands. Actually, I'd rather chew off my own arm then try to draw hands at this point, they drive me nuts. With faces it's always the eyes that kill me. I haven't quite been able to pinpoint the reason why though. I have a feeling that the day I do I'll finally be able to figure out how to do them without pulling out my hair ;)

Thanks for the book rec! I think a trip to the bookstore is in my near future, if only to check out some of the recs I've been getting on life drawing =)

!!! Wow! These are so cute! I totally did a spit take on, "And I'm going to be attacked by life-sucking vampires from another galaxy," too! I feel so bad for Rodney's hair in the second one! It's totally traumatized! I think the third one is my favorite and now I want to write an outtake of John teaching Rodney to ride his skateboard. (No, not a euphemism at all, no.) Oh, poor Rodney. John kept the Hair. All of it.

Thank you! I'm so glad you scanned those in! Do you mind if I link to this post?

PS: I know squat about drawing but my take on your realism is that you've captured something in the lines or the shadows or something where I recognize the characters and not just the faces, but the expressions or...posture, for lack of a more accurate term, or something that defines the characters. Aside from technical proficiency, which I can speak of with no authority besides, "Dude, it's better than I could do!" ;)

Not at all, feel free! =)

I'm really glad you liked them. The third one is my favorite too. Amusingly, I didn't even know what I was drawing at first with that one. I just started drawing pissedoff!Rodney and the next thing I knew he was on a skateboard and trying to break John's shoulder ;)

I want to write an outtake of John teaching Rodney to ride his skateboard. (No, not a euphemism at all, no.)

I could so see John trying to teach him and poor Rodney just flying off the thing. I love skateboards, but I always end up on my backside with bruises everytime I try them. Heh. Also, I'm now never going to be able to look at a skateboard without thinking about things that should not be associated with a skateboard. Ever. *g*

Rodney's hair in the second one! It's totally traumatized! It really is. I can't help thinking that he looks like a reject from an anime show. Hair gel is an artform. One that's abused on a daily basis by far too many men ( ... )
