Wow, sounds like an idiot. However you feel on politics, it's best to discuss with people WHO want to engage and where you know what parties you're dealing with. Just being snotty in a general group is pretty suicidal, rarely anything in life is as divisive.

Exactly! You can't have any sort of meaningful conversation if the other person is too close-minded.

If pressured, I'll identify myself as Catholic, but in all honesty, I'm more of an, "I'll make an independent-decision, with or without your influence, based on my own personal moral and ethical values." I tend to tread lightly when it comes to religion, because many people don't allow for alternatives and refuse to accept and/or acknowledge the reasoning behind the other side. Or they don't apply the same restrictions to themselves as they demand of others. Guess that follows in politics as well.

I enjoy a lot of the rituals of the Church (repetition gives me personal comfort), but there are a lot of individual and group sentiments of a less than accepting nature that makes me nervous to go to mass. And probably why I haven't gone in years or ever had first communion. It's really sad, because I want to view the Church as a place for Community, but I feel more secure reflecting about God on my own rather than be subjected to possible derision.

"I'll make an independent-decision, with or without your influence, based on my own personal moral and ethical values." This is exactly how I feel! Read all of the books, newspapers and magazines you can and make a judgement based on your own thoughts and life experience. It's called being an independent thinker with a questioning mind--why is that so scary for this older chick?

I still remember the women bishops argument and how condescending and mean they were to you. I will be glad when it's all over!

*hugs*
