The Movies

I love the movie experience. I love going into the theater, sit in the middle of the third row of our stadium-seating theater, and let the music and the movie roll over me. I love being so caught up in the movie that I gasp and cringe and laugh and cry. Preferably all in one movie.

I understand that not every movie is going to give me that, just like not every painting can be a masterpiece, every song a work of art. But there are some things I would like to see in movies. Little changes, just tiny little small ideas.

*Less sex. I don't need to see that. It makes me uncomfortable. People who DO want to see it can watch Skinemax. Call me a prude if you like, but I believe sex is a beautiful thing when it's between a husband and wife who love each other. But it belongs in private. Don't want to see it. I hate seeing casual sex in movies. And I despise rape scenes. I don't understand how someone can watch that without feeling sick. I really don't understand a woman who will submit to letting herself being filmed that way. This probably has a lot to do with my past, but what can I say? I don't like being reminded about it.

*Fewer boobies. I have a pair; I can see them anytime I want.

*More character development. It seems like the characters are becoming more and more 2-dimensional archetypes rather than complex people. See "Firefly." The story was about the characters. They drove the story. In most movies and TV shows, I feel like the story drives the characters.

*Uplifting messages: I have seen a lot of very dark movies come down the pike. I am sick of horror. Can we have some more in the Chronicles of Narnia, Lilo&Stitch, Emperor's New Groove, and Miracle vein?

*More diverse casts. There was a brief period in the 80s when you could see a movie with black, asian, hispanic, and white people all in the same movie. Like Aliens 2 for example. These days it seems like we have movies that are just for one group. I would prefer to see something that looks more like life. The Matrix is another good example.

I'll probably think of more later.
