the first day of fall...and classes

Huzzah! I got my radio to play the local NPR, so I can join the Santa Cruz NPR community. In twenty minutes, I have heard my university mentioned at least twice. I'm pretty excited. Ah, morning edition. The other exciting thing is my roommate seems to be a morning person and seems not care too much about noise, so I should be able to listen to the radio a fair amount...assuming I had time.

Time is going to be a big issue this quarter for me. Actually, time is going to be an issue for the entire school year. I have signed myself up for quite the heavy (but managable) load. I'm taking 22 units (5 classes; 3 upper-division, 1 language course, and 1 2-unit course that's designed to get me an internship in the non-profit sector). So, my schedule (not that anybody will remember it, nor do they need to remember it) is:

LING 101 Phonology I [MWF 11-12:10 + section]
RUSS 4 Intermediate Russian [MWF 2-3:10]
HIST 178D Russian Intellectual History [TTh 12-1:45 + section]
CRWN 185 PTP Internship Prep [Th 2-3:45]
LTMO 155B Soviet Literature [TTh 4-5:45 + section]

That schedule entails a lot of Russia. A lot. I'm pretty happy with it. It means that I'll have an internship by the end of the quarter, something in the non-profit sector related to my majors in the Humanities. I like it. Oh, the clincher on it, however, is that I'll be working at Quizno's. I'll work in the evenings (MWF, and Sat/Sun) so it shouldn't be too bad. I'll either go crazy or actually be productive and get my work done.

Like I've said in my past few entries, it's time to work hard and play harder. I'm looking forward to this, honestly. Sometimes ya gotta hit the ground running, ya know? Especially when you've been preparing yourself for such a jolt.

Another thing I did was make a daily log that's posted near my desk monitoring my study of the Russian language. I started it two days ago, and both days I did 30 minutes of Rosetta Stone. My goal, ideally, would be to get up to 1 hour a day, but with everything else [ 22 units, internship, job, girlfriend, active social life] I think that may have to wait. I'm pretty proud of it though. The study log is something I should have done a while ago.

The only thing that scares me is that I'm the kind of person who typically spends more time doing nothing than anything. I know I can handle this; if I can't, then I can back out of whatever I can cut (the job would be the first thing to go, obviously).

I'm glad I woke up early today, though. That means I have the next 2 hours or so to relax possibly study Russian or something.

I hope everyone has a great day. I'll update about how classes are once they get fully underway. Take care, ya'll.
