Since I feel I have conquered one of my lifetime obstacles "food & exercise" I feel I can move on to my next issue, "Money".
I have always been level headed about money, well after the age of 25 anyway. We are able to pay our bills on time and have some money set aside for emergencies etc. That I am good at.
I am however not good at planning for the future and saving money. I don't go overboard buying expensive things. Almost everything I buy is at a bargain price. I don't consider myself materialistic although I do like to have material things.
I don't expect anyone to hand me anything. What I have been able to achieve I have done for myself without anyones "monitary" support. I always hear women talking about marrying a "rich" man so that all of their money problems can go away. I always come back with, "you don't need to marry a rich man, you need to make things happen for yourself with your own steam" Why would you want to be indebted to a man, or be in a loveless marriage just because you don't know how you would survive financially without your husband? Unless the man is a multimillionaire and you don't have a prenuptual agreement. :)
I want to have a future were I am financially secure. Social Security is not going to be enough for me to maintain the type of lifestyle I like to live. So I need to get my butt in gear and start planning for the futeu.e Yes, I do have a 401 K etc, but is that even really enough?
I am challenging myself to learn more about money, about investments etc. What the hell is a Roth IRA? Why would I have that instead of a CD account? How in the world do you read those little numbers that run across the tv screen on those news channels?
Just like I took on the challenge of educating myself on food and excercise, I am going to do the same with finances to assure I am not financially strapped when I retire. I advise all women to the same.
A friend who is very finance savy recommended a Suze Ormon book, titled "Women & Money". I have read the first few chapters and it's excellent. Hopefully it will answer most of my questions and I will have an idea on what I need to research further.
