Chapter one
“The feeling of numbness overpowers the weak...”
Other than the soft sounds of mourning and incoherent words, dull silence filled the air. It was almost too suffocating, how so much misery can fill such a spacious place, especially since only very few people were around, not even filling half the size of the room. Flowers of different sizes and colors-usually bringing joy to anyone who catches a glimpse of them-adorned the small altar pushed against the wall at the opposite side of the door. They did very little in easing the sadness that embraced every weeping soul present to witness a memory of a person who passed away-a framed photograph of a beautiful smiling woman with dark shoulder-length hair, sat in the middle of the beautiful bundles of flowers.
Someone who was precious to them…
Someone they loved dearly…
Not everyone shed tears, though anyone can tell they are not any less affected for such a loss of such a great person, a great friend, a great relative, a great wife, a great mother...
Yuu stood beside the doorway-face devoid of any expression, body seemingly paralyzed in its place. His eyes were set on his mother’s photograph; the way it seemed like she was staring back at him, smiling. Yuu found it hard to breathe, but he also found it hard to look away.
Longing…
Yuu felt delicate hands on his shoulder, turning him away from the image that only inflicted pain within him. But the intention was not fully achieved as his body was the only part of him that obeyed; his eyes still locked on to his mother’s photograph. He felt one of those hands leave his shoulder and move on his cheek, forcing him gently to divert his attention in to something else.
Yuu stared at a pair of swollen eyes, not being able to immediately comprehend who was the person half kneeling in front of him. One hand was brushing his cheek lovingly, while the other held an unintentionally tight grip on his shoulder. Yuu blinked a few times, before finally realizing that the person in front of him was his older sister.
“Yuu, are you alright?” worry was evident in his sister’s voice. Yuu didn’t know why his sister was asking such a thing. Probably because of what had happened? If that was the case, she should already know what the answer was-no.
Or maybe because with their mother gone, she’ll be the one to make sure that her two younger brothers are well taken care of…
That task is not something that can be relied on to their father, since his work alone was already enough to wear him out-or at least that was what he wanted to happen. Yuu’s sister is only 18 years old, just 9 years older than he is, and having to shoulder a lot of responsibilities all of a sudden at that age is just so difficult.
And right now, she’s just trying to make the most of what there is by seeking the feeling of comfort from what’s left behind…
Yuu felt his sister shake his shoulders a bit too harshly, successfully catching his attention once more; oblivious to the fact that his mind wandered off.
“Are you alright?” his sister repeated, earning her a small nod from Yuu.
Yuu’s throat felt dry, and he didn’t really have the strength to talk, resulting in to him lying to his sister about what he really felt. He was not okay. Of course he was not okay, but for a different reason.
Apart from everything that had happened, something was wrong with himself, but he can’t tell what it was.
“Excuse me, is Mr. Shiroyama here?” the question sounded like the voice came from a woman. Yuu’s sister, who was still half kneeling in front of Yuu, looked up-finding a tall and beautiful woman standing behind her little brother. She stood up and made herself look neat-straightening out her clothes and wiping her watery eyes, then plastered on a simple smile.
Yuu on the other hand, turned around to look at the woman behind him. Curiosity got the better of him. He knew almost all of his mother’s friends, probably because there are only a handful of them and all of them are people who his mother goes to work with; after all, his mother took him to her workplace dozens of times, but he never did encounter the woman before.
That only meant that the woman must a friend his father’s. The woman did look for his father in the first place.
Yuu became oblivious to the woman and his sister’s exchange of words, and just kept on staring. He studied the woman carefully and silently, not that he was trying to be someone perverted, but he just wanted to ensure to himself that the woman was not that type of woman whom his father have an affair with, since his father’s devotion towards their mother has always been questionable in Yuu’s eyes.
And to think that someone would have the gull to show up in a place and time such as this…
Yuu frowned slightly, disappointed at himself for thinking of such things-jumping in to conclusions. His attention, however, suddenly diverted towards a young boy hiding behind the woman, his hand gripping her skirt tightly.
Was he hiding behind her the whole time? He wondered…
“Stay here for a while with our guests, okay?” Yuu’s sister whispered, snapping Yuu out of his thoughts once more. She left him their guests, probably to get their father, wherever he was, Yuu didn’t really pay attention.
Yuu stared at the woman again, who was smiling at him. Yuu returned the gesture by bowing his head slightly. He turned his attention back to the young boy. He was no longer hiding behind the woman, and instead stood beside her, his hand holding the woman’s own-probably his mother. Yuu bowed his head at the same manner as he did to the boy’s mother, but the boy just stared at him strangely. After a while, the young boy bowed back, though the odd look he gave Yuu never left. Yuu felt uneasy under the young boy’s stare, and decided to just return on to what he was doing earlier-staring at his mother’s photograph.
Yuu felt someone tug the sleeve of his shirt gently. He turned his head slightly, barely even noticeable, just enough to see who tugged on his sleeve.
The young boy… with the same expression plastered on his face…
Yuu tried his best to pretend he didn’t feel the little force the young boy used to get his attention-leaving the young boy ignored. The way the young boy looked at him bugged him at a certain level, and there was no way Yuu will last looking back at such an expression without showing that he was a bit annoyed. Being a bit too expressive has always been a problem for him-something his mother always pointed out, and at the same time, it was something he had inherited from her.
The young boy tugged on Yuu’s sleeve again, this time, harder.
“Yuu-chan… Yuu-chan… Why aren’t you crying?”
An innocent question…
Yuu’s eyes widened at the sudden question. It wasn’t something he had expected to hear from the young boy, or anyone at all for that matter. He finally turned to acknowledge the young boy-wanting to respond. His lips parted, but in the end closed without any word spoken. The young boy frowned when Yuu gave no response.
The feeling that Yuu can’t comprehend, it wasn’t because he didn’t cry-it was because he didn’t feel anything, even though he was supposed to be the one who was affected the most.
The numbness Yuu felt prevented him to question another thing he was supposed to be bothered about…
How did the young boy know his name?
Author's Notes:
I'm really like this chapter. Though, I just hope that towards the end, it didn't give a weak feeling. I was quite unsure at that part.
I was supposed to finish and post this earlier... but something unexpected came up last Thursday that hindered me to finish on time. LOL.
Feel free to leave comments, violent reactions, etc. And if there are any corrections, please point them out. I wasn't really able to check this chapter properly ^^;
