Weekend Preview

I'm not sure if I mentioned this in the Other Journal or not, but I'll tell the story here anyway.

As a result of the horrifying club fire in Rhode Island, many clubs we play in have been shut down, or have had to drastically change their operations in order to meet new code and/or stay in business. This makes sense; a lot of seemingly dumb construction rules were made up specificially to keep people from getting killed... again. How this has affected our band has ranged from outright cancellations, to incredibly low attendance at clubs that have been closed, open, and closed again in rapid succession, to... nothing. (Presumably some of these places were already up to spec?)

The least offensive and most amusing changes we've seen, though, were at a club in Maine that always treats their bands well. They have a sign up on the stage that says, "Dear Band: No fireworks, alcohol, or loose women allowed on stage, per order of the boys in blue." My sax player and I walked in early for a gig there last month, read the sign, and he contemplated it for a moment and then said to me, "Well, that totally rules us out." *rimshot*

Saturday night, September 13, the Matthew Stubbs Band returns, at long last, to the Blackburn Tavern, in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Club information and directions are available on their website: http://www.blackburntavern.com/
