This is a post about something that I hold quite dear to my heart.
Today I was thinking, in church, and I so happened to be singing a hymn that is very near to my heart.
"There is no greater love says the Lord, than to lay down your life for a friend."
It's from the verse John 13:15, which is, "There is no greater love than to lay down your life for a friend."
I can remember hearing that song from the late afternoon masses of my later childhood. I think maybe I was 9 or 10? This song always struck me. To lay down your life for a friend...Jesus sacrificed himself, showing the greatest of all loves. He was the earthly example for all of us to imitate. No greater love...In a search for what love is, for me to hear something like that literally changes my life.
I believe it was around this point that I decided that I needed to give my life direction, find something for my life to mean. What better place to start than this song that I loved; it had a message that touched me deep in my soul, the essence of my being. I wanted my life to become about this verse. If I had to be summed up by a small amount of words, I'd want it to be this verse. I was very passionate about finding a meaning to my life, and this was it, to lay down my life for a friend if needed, to demonstrate the greatest of all loves. I wanted my life, my personality to reflect that verse. The meaning of sacrifice runs very deep through my veins.
So from here, you can see where my sense of duty and willing self-sacrifice comes from. I gladly express my will to sacrifice myself for that which I deem worthwhile. I commit myself to service in order to help others; I give my talents to the greater good. And through it all, I've found that all of these things make me the happiest, that pure happiness which has no end...the deepest of all fulfillment. For me, the opportunity to prove that I will give my life up for a friend, for the greatest love of all...that makes my life worthwhile. The path I've chosen gives me that opportunity; that's probably the most significant reason why I'm happy with my choice to attend the academy.
I want to live up to the New Testament's commandment, so I will lay down my life for a friend.
I will lay down my life for God, freedom, and country.
I will lay down my life for the Lord and man, to show my devotion and the power, strength, and truth in God's word...it's all for the greatest of all love.
And hey, now you know why my friends are all so close to me; they've got to be people worth the sacrafice. You can also see how my strong sense of loyalty developed from this verse.
No greater love than to lay down your life for a freind...or for anything for that matter.
