I've gotten to the point where I have a standard gift template for both of my parents. If at all possible, I get my dad something to do with Sherlock Holmes. Usually some new book with a slightly new take on the franchise, but sometimes a DVD of some Holmes movie or TV series ( Read more... )

I finally found a good gift for my dad for the first time in five years: the boxed set of the complete "Keeping Up Appearances" dvds.

He called me on Sunday to tell me that Christmas was cancelled as far as he was concerned; long story that I don't want to go into here for potential legal/moral/embarrassment reasons, but suffice to say that it's all par for the course as far as my father's concerned.

I feel your pain as far as the "not appreciating gifts" thing goes. My dad never really cared for much I gave him, and certainly never put much thought into the gifts he gave. One year, everybody got K&W Cafeteria gift certificates. I guess that was easiest, since K&W is about a mile from his house. Oh, and he didn't have time to give them to us. HE just had them in envelopes shoved into the tree--he told us to just grab them; he had to run off to a meeting he had already scheduled during the family Christmas celebration.

Sherlock Holmes is a great present. Can't go wrong there. Which reminds me; this morning I meant to look on Google to see what a farthing looks like; gotta run!
