Anime Review: One Piece (1999)
After seeing high rankings, getting a recommendation from a friend, and somehow receiving the entire dvd collection of the series for free, I decided to watch One Piece. It is primarily a comedy/adventure, somewhat in the same vein as Slayers (one of my fovourite animes), but none of the jokes or situations were worth conjuring a laugh or even a smile.... I did not care for the characters, nor their quest... Quite different from Slayers, which managed to be consistently hilarious from episode to episode, have really cool, funny, deep characters who's actions often spoke louder than their words, the scientific, nerdy precision that was put into the fantastic construction of their magical world of sorcerors and monsters and on top of that, the best anime songs I have ever come across. Obviously, I'd rather talk about how much better Slayers is than trying to remember what I watched of One Piece.
In short, I hated it. And I was compelled to give up after watching 12 episodes. I don't understand this series' popularity. This is one of the worst animes I've seen. Of course, it's still nowhere near as bad as Serial Experiments Lain.
