the walk-out today was good (and good food), but it was at 11:45 which meant that we walked out on 5 minutes of class and lunch - ? also, ms. urista let us out at 11:45, which kind of defeated the walking out.
this immigrants-are-bad mentality really upsets me, because technically everyone here is an immigrant (except for native americans); i dont see how anyone can get off being all high-and-mighty about citizenship. the city council wrote a statement opposing the bill and one of the members read it to us and pointed out that the 14th amendment grants protection and rights to PERSONS in states' jurisdictions (not citizens, a word that was used earlier in the same section, so there is the obvious differentiation) which the bill is in direct violation of, but then again, will this supreme court really see it that way if the constitutionality is called into question?
i always forget that my parent are immigrants too. its mostly because they didnt walk across the border and do all the things that are being disputed now (i.e. avoiding border patrol, enduring hardships en route), but they did immigrate here.
i hope that the people who voted for this and those who want this bill to pass realize that the people who would be affected by this arent just a nameless, faceless mass. i hope that everyone knows at least one immigrant and when they have to decide how they stand, they think "oh geez, well so-and-so is an immigrant and he/she is a really awesome person...how can i really support this?" i cant imagine that the majority of people wouldn't feel this way, but then again, i have been very lucky to grow up in a very diverse city.
