For all of its widely regarded beauty, Paris has a good few disgusting aspects as well. For example, public bathrooms are typically nowhere to be found, and those that are require payment to be used. The result of this is that when people need to use the bathroom they usually do it in public. While this might work above ground, it does not work where the metro is concerned, because the smell has nowhere to go. The result is the widespread stench of urine and feces at many of the stations and trains.
This reached its pinnacle for me today when, after class, I stepped on a train to find the most disgusting smell I've yet encountered, having used the metro for an entire month. As I walked to the other end of the car assuming whatever this was must be somewhere near the entrance, I nearly stepped on a huge pile of human waste. I can't even be sure if it was poop, but it consisted a very thick, brown liquid with a solid lump in the middle, and had been tracked and spread all over that end of the train. I was fortunate enough to have stepped onto some of these tracks, wearing sandals, which definitely won't be worn again until I get home tomorrow and they are thoroughly disinfected.
What made this even worse is that I had just eaten a cheese sandwhich, venti iced latte, and chocolate banana muffin at Starbucks since I missed my last two meals. In conclusion, I doubt I'll be eating again before midnight and am glad to be finished using the Paris metro for another year.
