Summary: It's not just about being on camera, it's about sharing the things that he does with so many people in so many places through the power of the internet.
nine people's favorite thing
When Charlie starts making videos, it's because he just likes filming. There's nothing weird about that, plenty of people enjoy being on camera, but it's not really until he first makes a video with Alex that he gets it. It's not just about being on camera, it's about sharing the things that he does with so many people in so many places through the power of the internet. It's about maybe making someone feel less alone and decreasing worldsuck a little.
He's not alone anymore, he's got friends and the like, but there isn't any "special lady" in his life. He's tried that, yes, but it always felt like they wanted something that he didn't. He's not like Alex, he doesn't go out and fuck girls any chance he gets. Charlie prefers curling up against someone and maybe watching some Doctor Who with them. That's his idea of a date, and he knows that Alex thinks it's a bit silly, but Charlie doesn't care.
Not everything in the world is about sex. That would be what some people might think about his slight obsession with making videos, but it's not really that at all. He just likes knowing that people are watching, that people are interacting with him even if he's not really interacting with them. It's nice to know that he can make a difference in someone's life, maybe teach them how light or the sun works. Maybe he can make them smile or help them remember the chemicals of attraction with one of his songs. Maybe he can inspire them to watch more Doctor Who.
All it takes from his end is a few hours of editing and a smile. It's a pretty good way to make a living, Charlie thinks, and videos have always been a good outlet for expressing himself. They allow him to be a little more out-going, a little less shy. They allow him to be someone that he's not (not exactly, anyway) and that's what he likes about it.
He likes that people everywhere know his name, he likes that now he's got the chance to do all these amazing things and share them with people everywhere. He likes that, at heart, he's really still just a guy who likes Doctor Who and tacking stuff up onto his wall. He just happened to make a video that just happened to get a lot of views and now he's famous on the internet. It's a pretty brilliant thing, if he's being honest with himself, and he wouldn't trade it for anything.
Giving up what he has would mean giving up the Youtube community and Charlie's not sure he can do that. He's not sure that he can give up all the connections and friendships he's made with people who like making videos just as much as he does and who want to make that tiny difference too.
Charlie thinks it's a shame that people thing Youtube's just a site where you can watch cute cats and viral videos when there's such a community behind it. If he can make just one person realize, the way he realized, that Youtube is so much bigger than people think . . . Well, then he'll be happy.
