Summary: When he names her Syrena, it is not because he thinks that is the best name for her or even that it is her name. It is because, when he looks into her eyes, that is what he sees: calm serenity.
is this what it feels like to really cry?
When the case holding the mermaid clatters to the ground and her tail melts away into human legs, Philip's first response is may the Lord help me and his second thought has to do with how nice her legs look and how much he wants them wrapped around him which, again. May the Lord help him, because those kind of thoughts most definitely lead to trouble. Still, when she tries to stand and walk but fails, Philip finds himself picking her up because he cannot bear to see someone so beautiful in such great distress.
He carries her, his shirt wrapped around her and concealing the body that he so desires. Perhaps it is her newly acquired legs that he finds interesting because now she is obtainable and not merely aesthetically pleasing. Whatever it is, though, Philip prays that he may still hold onto his beliefs in this troubling situation. It's not that Philip thinks that she isn't willing, but that he worries about her consent. How can he know that her gratitude isn't what's fueling that? But no.
Perhaps there is something more at work here. The way she looks at him is - he wonders if there is anything in the Bible about falling in love with a mermaid, but he cannot recall any such thing off the top of his head so he prays that the Heavenly Father does not think it fit to call him a sinner for loving something so nice and beautiful. She is pure, and he would like to keep her that way because anything else would be a shame not because she is sullied, but because Philip thinks that she might be the closest thing to an angel that he will ever be near and he wants to savor that.
When he names her Syrena, it is not because he thinks that is the best name for her or even that it is her name. It is because, when he looks into her eyes, that is what he sees: calm serenity.
She thinks that he is different than the others, that he is kinder and better, and perhaps this is why she eventually falls in love with him. She never says it out loud to Philip, but he knows because he can see it in her eyes and he can feel it when she wraps her arms around his neck now.
There are so many things that he should say to her, but he does not say any of those before they reach the pools. When they lower Syrena into the pool, her tail comes back as they are lashing her wrists to the pool with Philip's belt. Blackbeard gives him a cruel smirk when he takes it from Philip's hands and tightens it around Syrena's wrists. They tie her up with rope too, because a mermaid is not to be trusted, but she does not cry as she struggles against the bonds keeping her in place and cuts into her wrists ever so slightly. She does not cry and she does not cry until someone stabs him and then he does not remember much at all until he does, coming back for her. She cries, and Blackbeard has his tear.
When Syrena looks at him again, her eyes are filled with hurt and pain. He tries to explain, tries to right things between them, but Syrena only swims away.
She swims away and he has nothing to do then but lie beside the pool and bleed. He wonders if she thinks that he betrayed her, because he did not. He did not know and he did not mean to make her cry but she had and that was that. Blackbeard had his tear now, Syrena had swam away to somewhere better, and there was nothing to be done about it. She left him beside the pool to die and he was, thinking of her and trying not to remember her perfect body.
Weakly making the sign of the cross, Philip prays that he will be saved and that he will not be sent to hell for recent events. He prays that Syrena is safe and that no harm comes to her. He prays that Blackbeard's daughter may realize that saving her father's soul will be a nigh impossible task. He prays that he may die peacefully, and he prays that his body may be buried, even if it be in leaves.
He does not know how long he lies there or how long he prays, because there is no sense of time. He only remember Syrena finding him again and saying I can save you, but you have to let me. He kisses her then and she drags him away, her tail brushing against his legs. He thinks that he is going to drown, that this will be the end, but Syrena smiles at him and he knows that is not the truth and she has saved him, exactly as she promised.
