Commentary

Not long ago, I heard NPR commentary to the effect that people think just calling someone is as good as leaving a message. I agree with the viewpoint of the commentator: IT IS NOT. Even if I have caller ID, I'm not going to spend my day calling back people who weren't serious enough about talking to me to leave a message.

This brings me to my brother. He got a new Verizon cell phone. He called me and asked me to call him back. He didn't leave his number as part of the message. My "missed call" list was no help. It listed "no new numbers." This happened twice. Brother called, asked me to call back, and never gave me the number. Hah. So today he texts me with the message: "Do you get my text messages? My number is xxxxxxxxxx" But he didn't sign it. So... I answered because I figured it was him, but I said "yes. Who are you?" and signed it. D'oh.

Gadgets do not make communication easier. Effective communication is still necessary.
