It’s harder to believe that “talking” to God works after Castiel shows up. Sam has a hard time believing that the angels are angels because, well, they aren’t comforting. At least not in the way Sam had always envisioned.
Before, Sam would find time to pray while Dean showered, went for food, or hit the bar. Even when Dean slept on the passenger side of the Impala, Sam would pray in his head, mouthing out silently what he really would like to say aloud.
Now, he remembers what he’s seen before he prays, and the words catch in his throat and die. Even if someone is there, listening, Sam can’t bring himself to speak anymore.
He feels like it’s a lost cause.
