Just back from "Wicked" at the Kennedy Center with Jackie. What a wonderful, wonderful show--it certainly made me wish I'd seen it in NY the other year with the original cast when I had the chance. I'll admit that I don't remember a whole lot about the book, having read it a good 4 or more years ago, but from what I do remember, they took some liberties with the story. But it didn't bother me. For those of you who don't know, it's the story of the Wizard of Oz told from the Wicked Witch of the West's point of view, sort of her biography.
The two leads, playing Elphaba (the Wicked Witch) and Glinda, where absolutely marvellosu performers. I didn't care for all of the songs, but there were a few very good ones, and all of the performers were good. Since the original cast recording's only $10 on iTunes, its downloading now. I figured rather than a few songs, I might as well get all of it at that price.
The obscenely expensive nosebleed seats actually weren't too bad, since they were at least in the center with a clearn view of all the stage, and a lovely view of the chandelier. I'm not being sarcastic with that, either, the lighting fixture in the Kennedy Center Opera House really is quite lovely.
There were some great little lines about regime change and sort of the political side of what's going on in Oz that were hilarious, and really had to have been funnier for a DC crowd than they would have been anywhere else.
Overall great show that made me want to go pick up a copy of the book again. If the national tour comes near you, go see it.
And just for
film_still, the woman who played Madam Morrible was also the woman who was the voice of Lady Kluck. I know you'll appreciate my joy at learning that!
