(OOC: If you want to be a part of this away mission, please read the whole post including OOC comments at the end for all information, captains orders, etc.)Kirk stared down at the ice planet on the forward view screen unhappily. He didn't have the best relationships with ice planets, and the idea of going down to this one had him less than pleased ( Read more... )

Even through very thick layers of specially designed material against the cold, the instant that the transport finished and reality stabilized itself in Jim's mind, he felt the cold. It burned through him, a wind already tearing at him and howling its rage against an empty world. He was glad that the goggles were lightly tinted because even with them the utter blue-white of the world was blinding.

Fuck, it was cold.

Bones looked around as soon as they got their, saw Jim next to him, good. Call him stupid, but he always felt better after seeing Jim people re-materialize properly. He took a deep breath, letting it out slow and feeling it freezing in front of him. The rest of his team was next to him, and he could see his own reaction to the terrible cold mirrored on their heavily covered expressions.

"Okay guys, let's keep our eyes open." Right now, all they could do was follow Jim's orders, looking for the colonists and hope they weren't going to be needed.

Hank took in the sight in front of him and shivered through his layers slightly. He muttered softly "Wow, they went for the welcoming architecture." He adjusted the stuff to cover his mouth better, almost feeling his breath freezing inside him.

The wind bit straight through her clothing, making M'Kriss' fur fluff up in a natural instinct to protect herself. She hated the feeling of her tail being trapped. Behind her goggles, her pupils narrowed to slits.

From around her she pulled forward her medical kit, making sure it had ready access, and tugged out the tricorder. A quick read to get a temperature, disbelief of the negative sign in front of the number, and she put it away refusing to look again.

Illogically, he had some apprehension about transporting down to a dangerous planet (though it wouldn't be crumbling, he wasn't rescuing any individuals). This would be a standard survey, uneventful yet cold, and no one was going to die. They would gather enough data to report back to Starfleet and then they would return to the Enterprise, unharmed and unchanged. His bondmates, especially.

It was the chill and bite of the wind that made him shiver, even with the extra warmth Jim had given him. One hand tightened over the tricorder strap while the other fisted at his side.

He stepped up to Jim's side. "We should attempt to gain access to the complex." Spock tried to say over the wind, with a rather emphatic point towards the building before them.

"Looks like a bit of a hike," Jim called out over the wind, and started down towards the huge building in the distance. He looked back to see the group following him, hunched forward against the wind. He already had a huge hatred of ice planets (thanks, Spock) and this was even worse than Delta Vega.

Slowly he moved down through the snow - it was a steep embankment that was not easy to get down, but they made it through to the base of the huge building. He got his footing in the doorway and looked at the secure pad, cursing as it was covered in ice.

Jim was staring, looking at something by the time Bones got there. Wondering why Jim hadn't opened the door, he made his way to the front, then saw the frozen console. Shit, how were they going to get inside?

Soon everyone had made it there, huddled close together. The temperature was dropping and despite Jim's best efforts, poking at the console, the door wasn't budging.

"Fuck it - blast the damn thing open," he heard Jim say to Lt Pierce, and Bones got his ass out of the way.

Hank nodded and dug through his own kit to get the plasticine explosives out. "If everyone would move out of the blast zone please?" He laid the explosives where the door ought to be, and set them to explode when he hit the button then got out of the way of the explosive looking around to make sure that everyone was out of the way. He was not about to blow up his crewmates.

Waiting for a moment to make sure everyone was safely out of the way, he hit the button and set off the explosives. "There you go sir."

The cold was formidable, cutting through the layers of outer wear as if they were nothing. Paula shivered as they stood outside the massive complex. It had been slow going, all of them slipping more than once on the descent. She moved in close with the others as Hank worked to get the door open, stamping her feet to keep warm. The lack of any other noises aside from the howling of the wind made her uneasy.

She peered over her shoulder, studying the bleak landscape. What little light there was seemed to be disappearing rapidly.

Paula turned back at the sound of the blast, watching as Hank and another of the security people cautiously entered the building.

Cold. She hated cold. It always sank into her bones like some kind of weird flesh-eating virus - and yeah, her similes were off, but her brain felt frozen. Nora shook her head and forced herself to concentrate; she would not lose focus in a potentially dangerous situation.

She looked the building up and down, trying to get a read on what was going on. It had probably been built with more advanced technology, judging at least by the outside, and she wondered what might be inside.

INSIDE THE BUILDING npc_aliens July 6 2010, 02:12:27 UTC
Inside the blown door was a large room that was mostly filled with ice. However it was getting it, it was quickly taking over the facility even though it could not have been more than a week since there was life within. It was only lit from within by the weak sun pouring in through the windows.

Once they were out of the wind, Spock took the opportunity to look at their surroundings, committing the scene to memory. The encroachment of the ice was surprising given the probable time lapse, but it didn't bode well for any survivors.

After flexing his fingers once or twice to encourage greater heat circulation, he brought up his tricorder and adjusted it to scan the surrounding energy emissions. There was the gravity field from the planet, but other than that, they may have well been in a cave, dead and lifeless, with these machines chiseled out of stone. He did step closer to a central unit, though, trying to determine if it might work, if they could defrost it.

"This equipment appears inoperable."

Nora had been trained to examine equipment, even if it was unfamiliar and (possibly...well, probably) hazardous. She looked at the central unit - frozen solid, it looked like. "Sir," she said hesitantly, "do you think the ice would have erased any information in here?"

Bones could hear them talking to each other, but the cold was hurting his ears. Sitting still, or even standing here still like this wasn't good. "Gotta keep moving, people, or we're gonna freeze."

It was quiet, so quiet, in an age when there was always some sort of computer hum or energy field softly buzzing. Right now, all Bones could hear was his breathing.

"Right," Jim said, though he was just as unnerved by the silence as Bones was. "Reinold, M'Kriss, Collins, Torvik, Spock." He looked to the group he had named, giving a particular look to Reinolds. He needed the man to protect this group with his life. "I want to know what happened in this building. Why is it shut down, where is everyone, what happened."

He looked to the rest of the group. "We're going to be checking out the research facility and living quarters."
