Author’s Notes: Written for Marvel_100. Crossover with The Authority. For those that do not know the fandom (really!? o_0)- it’s a Wildstorm comic book about a bunch of superheroes that decide to fix the world by taking it over. They live on a sentient spaceship known as The Carrier, who can transport them to any alternate reality in existence. Midnighter and Apollo are canonically gay and married to each other, Jenny is their adopted daughter, as well as the leader of TA.

The Price

It’s funny to sit in a room full of people and know they all are talking about you, though neither of them says a word. A telepathic equivalent of backbiting someone while standing in front of them. Steve would laugh if not for the fact that it’s all quite scary, after all, death is a scary experience and he is sure he died.

No, scratch that, he knows he died and yeah, he even got the tunnel but except that part, everything else was wrong. Instead of a white, bright light, his light was yellow and instead of relatives and friends he got… well them.

He surveys his hosts once gain; a young looking man with gentle smile, whom the rest calles Doctor. Another man, with long white hair and an outfit that screamed “superhero!” (or “supervillain!”, Steve hasn’t decided yet). A man clad in black sitting next to him, radiating threat in the same way that a loaded gun in your face would. The last of the men - barefoot, casual and yet, Steve is sure, capable of killing without remorse.

The women are similarly diverse - the one with wings and talons, as well as the one covered in liquid metal look dangerous, while the one with tattoos looks dreamy but, according to what he heard earlier, she was the one that brought him back to life.

Of course, there is still the girl - Jenny. She can’t be more than fourteen, she’s chewing a gum and has an air of teenage recklessness around her but the way the rest looks at her, the way he saw her giving orders none of the other people questioned, says enough. She is the leader. She is the one he will talk to… as soon as they finish the discussion that is - he is the stranger here.

“Captain,” Jenny’s voice cuts through the silence and only the years of training prevent Steve from flinching. He got quite distracted here. “Yes, Miss?” he asks, remembering to be particularly polite with her. Even if he is wrong and she’s not the leader, good manners have never killed anyone.

“We’ve had a talk with The Carrier and it’s quite adamant that we should keep you for now.”

The fact that she refers to The Carrier as “it” isn’t lost on Steve “And The Carrier is…”

“The ship we are in. It brought your corpse here, it made Rose revive you and now it tells us that you are too important to just die and that we should help you… not for free, of course”

The price, yes, there’s always a price and Steve is prepared for that. If the ship had enough power to bring him here, it can send him back. “I understand” he nods “What does it want?”

“It wants you to work for us… with us for a while. Do we have a deal?”

Steve laughs. Ah, the universe and its infinitely ironic sense of humor. “Sure, I’ll register. Where do I sign?”
