It's true that as one gets older and has more disposable income vs. free time, one sometimes has to re-evaluate what it's worth trying to do on one's own as opposed to just paying someone else to do it. On the other hand, there's still something quite satisfying about spending $16 and a few hours to fix something that I'm pretty sure would've cost ( Read more... )

And it only took me several months of putting off going to a mechanic for me to get around to figuring out that I could do it myself. ;) I did find some pictures on the web that were invaluable, given the total lack of help in the car manual.

I think I ran into that about a year ago. I decided my free time was worth more than the cost of doing something I was completely capable of doing, so I paid someone else to do it. It kind of hurts me to do so because I'm generally a penny-pincher, but I realized that based on my job, my time was literally worth more money than I would be saving by doing something else.

Thanks to inflation, I'm not so sure anymore.

That's the conclusion we've basically come to about house cleaning, although we're consistently incapable of keeping the house tidy enough to hire a maid. It's kind of pointless to waste the maid's time with having to pick up our crap off the floor.
