The World Beer Festival was in the Durham Bulls stadium last night. Went with C and several friends. Fun times. Here's some notes on stuff what I liked and more...
Totally awesome stuff:
Atwater Block Brewery's Vanilla Java Porter (Michigan) - so, so tasty
B. Nektar Meadery's lineup (also Michigan) - I liked all of these: Vanilla Cinnamon Mead, Wildberry Pyment, Orange Blossom Mead
Samuel Smith, The Old Brewery Tadcaster's Taddy Porter (England) - a delicious dark porter
Lion Brewery Ceylon's Lion Stout (Sri Lanka) - possibly the first Asian beer I've liked, though the description says it's made of malts from Britain, the Czech Republic, and Denmark, so that might explain it.
Kona Brewery's Pipline Porter (Hawaii) - already knew this was good, though I worry too much of it may actually be too much caffeine for me.
Pretty decent stuff:
(For these my notes were mostly "I think I might kinda like this maybe?" so I'm going by the book descriptions)
Huske Hardware House Breweing's Sledgehammer Stout (Fayetteville NC) - an imperial oatcreme with lactose
Legend Brewing's Porter (Richmond VA) - roasty black porter
Spoetzl Brewery's Shiner Black (Texas) - dark lager with Czech Saaz hops
Kaiser brewery's Xingu Black (Brazil) - Indian inspired schwarzbier, I remember this one being quite good
In the "I really have no clue if I liked that or not" category:
Roth Brewing's Foe Hammer (Raleigh NC) - a barleywine ale at 10%; a bit hoppy for me, but nevertheless fascinating
Thomas Creek Brewery's Dirty Monk (SC) - this one isn't listed in the program, Kevin said I should try it, and I wrote down "???". I have no idea.
Also not listed are a few more things I already knew, like Left Hand's Nitro Milk Stout (yum), Roth's Forgotten Hollow Cinnamon Porter (yum) and New Belgium's 1554.
And also, for reference, some I didn't really like much despite the descriptions sounding good:
Deschute's Black Butte Porter
Fullsteam's Working Man's Ale and Hogwash Hickory (disappointing, as I was intrigued by them)
Mother Earth's Dark Cloud (C thinks something about the certified organic process makes all their beers a bit off)
Starr Hill's Dark Starr Stout
Great Lakes' Edmund Fitzgerald Porter
Finally, stuff that had already run out (shake fist to heavens) that I'd still like to try some day:
Holy Mackerel Beers' HM Black (FL) - supposedly a chocolatey Belgian ale
Lone Rider's Sweet Josie Brown (Raleigh) - should just go out to the brewery sometime...
New South Brewing's Bourbon Stout (SC) - so sad that both the bourbon stouts were gone, wanted to try one
Odell Brewing's Bourbon Barrel Stout (CO) - see above, this one sounded even tastier from the description
Saranac Brewery's Pumpkin (NY) - pumpkin, cinnamon, allspice, cloves, ginger, vanilla. presumably seasonal.
Weeping Radish Brewery's Black Radish (Jarvisburg NC) - a schwarzbier
...whew, that's a lot of beer.
