Поговорим о зарплате
Вот мы и подошли к одной и самых важных тем, ради которой вы решили прибегнуть к помощи этого скромного пособия. «Одной из» потому, что как показывают западные исследования, во главу угла при поиске работы большинство из нас ставят понятие, описываемое фразой job worth doing. Никто из нормальных людей, к которым, надеюсь, относятся и мои уважаемые читатели, не хочет пусть даже за большие деньги тупо перекладывать бумажки. Понимание этого приходит с возрастом, но довольно быстро. Нам всем хочется делать что-то полезное. Иногда большая зарплата приносить пользу только мешает, и тогда начинается раздвоение личности, шизофрения, когнитивный диссонанс и прочие прелести офисной работы. Всё чаще мы читаем статьи про людей, которых сегодня принято называть downshifters, имевших когда-то дома на Рублёвке или в Майами, а теперь благополучно живущих в тайге или джунглях вдали от телевизоров, телефонов и прочей лабуды. Человек ищет себя. Но поначалу считает, что найти себя ему обязательно поможет большая зарплата. Не станем это мнением опровергать, а поговорим лучше о том, как и здесь добиться желаемого.
Чтобы не прогадать, а напротив - выгадать, после того, как вы ответили на все вопросы и уже получили ответ, мол, мы вас берём, не спешите радоваться, а сделайте серьёзный вид и либо скажите сразу, либо на отдельной встрече, которая должна произойти по вашей инициативе:
Mr. or Ms. (такие-то), I’m really excited about this opportunity. However, I have a number of questions about things that I would like to discuss with you. So, before we get down to the nitty-gritty, I’d like to find out (а дальше мы поговорим о том, что именно).
На собеседованиях вы не только рассказывали о себе, но и многое узнали о предполагаемой работе, однако именно сейчас самое подходящее время основные моменты прояснить. И хорошо бы вы подготовили список ваших уточняющих вопросов заранее, причём в момент разговора можете им спокойно пользоваться.
Вот как он может выглядеть:
· What are your professional and personal expectations of me?
· Can you describe the working environment here?
· What is your management style?
· What is the management style of your boss and the company?
· What are your personal plans with the company?
· How would you describe the philosophy of the company as well as your personal philosophy?
· How would you describe the culture and values of the company?
· How would you describe my potential peers?
· If I were to accept this offer, what can I do when I start to be most effective and contribute to alleviating your biggest problem?
· What is the percentage of turnover in the company?
· What is the turnover in this department?
· How often is there turnover in the job I’m discussing with you?
· What are the major problems facing the company and this department?
· What are the traits you see in me that are good for this job and made you want to hire me?
· Based on what you know of me, what might my weaknesses be in light of this job?
· Why do you want to hire me? What did I demonstrate to you that the other candidates didn’t?
· Why didn’t you hire from within?
· What aspects of the job or the company am I going to be surprised about?
· What are the worst aspects of the job?
· Is the company planning any layoffs or downsizings?
· How will my success be measured in this job?
· How is performance measured? How often? How does that relate to the job I’m considering?
· What happened to the last person in the job?
· Is the company seeking to grow? How?
· So, how might that affect this position?
· Exactly how much travel is involved with the job?
· Is there relocation now or down the road?
· How long do you plan to be in your position with the company?
· Why have people in the past failed to do well at this job?
· What are the company’s major strengths and weaknesses?
· What are your personal strengths and weaknesses?
· Can you explain the organizational structure of the company and of the department?
· Does the company have any present or pending legal issues?
· How is the department perceived by the rest of the company?
· Are there written goals for the department? Who sets them?
· How many people have been in the job in the last five years? Where are they now?
· May I speak with the person that has left (is leaving) the job?
· What would be my access to you? Daily, weekly, monthly?

Если вы претендуете на руководящую должность, вот вам второй список:
· Why are there no internal candidates for this job?
· How much authority will I have in running the department (the group, the facility)?
· I would like to speak to peers about the position that I am interviewing for. Can we arrange that?
· Are there any difficult personalities on the staff that I will be supervising?
· Are there any members of the staff that should be let go?
· How are the people in the department going to react to an outsider as a manager?
· May I speak with the staff I will be managing?
· What are the biggest problems in the department?
· What condition is morale in and why?
· Who are the problem employees?
· Who are the stars that can help my transition go smoothly?
· Are there any staff members that are in line for a promotion? Did any of them apply for this job?
· If I have budgetary responsibility, how large is the budget? Has the department been above or below budget, presently and in the recent past?
· What kind of reports am I going to be responsible for? Are they internal company reports, or governmental ones?
· Does the company plan to make any immediate acquisitions or be acquired or change in any way that might affect the job we are discussing?
· What is the greatest opportunity facing the company? Its greatest challenge?
Я специально эти вопросы не нумерую. Они исключительно для вашей импровизации. Просто, чтобы не забыть. Задавать их все тоже совершенно не обязательно - вас уже приняли. Задавайте только те, которые, действительно, помогут вам определиться с вашим окончательным решением. Или вы уже забыли, что тоже выбираете работодателя?..
Вопрос о деньгах я оставил на десерт. Умышленно, разумеется. Если оклад или его порядок не указан в объявлении по найму или если вы понимаете, что окончательная цифра будет зависеть от результатов собеседования, никогда не начинайте разговор о зарплате первым. Когда меня эта тема интересовала особенно, я обычно дожидался вопроса о том, сколько получаю на текущей должности, называл цифру процентов на 30-50% выше и ждал ответной реакции. Если собеседника указанная цифра не смущала, и он продолжал оживлённо задавать другие вопросы, я понимал, что, даже если и продешевил, точно не зря трачу своё время.
Итак, вот какие вопросы по этому поводу наверняка вам зададут и вот как вам лучше всего на них отвечать:
Вопрос: What are you currently earning? What have you been earning most recently?
Ответ: In my present (past) position I’m earning $_______.
Вопрос: What kind of money would you like to earn?
Ответ: I’d like to earn as much as I can, commensurate with the service that I give. I am just as interested in a fulfilling and challenging position as I am in the money I want to earn. I have found that if the position is right for me, and I am right for the company that I’m going to go work for, the money is usually going to take care of itself. What kind of money for this position did your organization have in mind?
Вопрос: What kind of salary are you looking for?
Ответ: Salary and earnings are important, but equally as important to me is the company, the job, the people, and the future. In the past, I have been earning $_________. What is the salary associated with this job?
Вопрос: You have been making $______________ and the money associated with this position is significantly less. How do we know that you will be happy?
Ответ: I realize there is a difference between what I have made and this position. However, I have found that if the opportunity is right and I am able to perform at my best, the difference in the money isn’t as important as the quality of the job and the opportunity.
Вопрос: What is the most money that you have ever made?
Ответ: There have been a few years in which I’ve been fortunate enough to be with organizations where my bonus earnings were sizable. But I realize that those are very uncommon. I am more interested in the opportunity, the challenge of the job, and the potential. If those things are taken care of, my earnings will reflect my performance.
Вопрос: What do you consider most important: a high salary, job recognition, or advancement?
Ответ: I have found that the better job I do and the harder I work, recognition, advancement, and, especially, money usually take care of themselves.
Вопрос: What kind of benefits are you expecting?
Ответ: Benefits, like money, to me are not as important as the company, the job, and the professional challenge. I will certainly take the benefits package into consideration if an offer is made, but right now those kinds of things shouldn’t be an issue.
Наконец, если вы в итоге получили предложение о работе, прочитали его (поскольку по правилам оно всегда даётся вам в печатном виде либо присылается по электронной почте) и в целом довольны, но всё же хотели бы уточнить нюансы оклада и бонусов (например, потому, что бонусы хороши, но не гарантированы, а оклад гарантирован, но маловат), скажите:
Mr. or Ms. (такие-то), I do want this job. My employment here will be good for both of us. However, I need to ask, is that the best you can do regarding the salary?
Если вы внимательно прочитали предыдущие страницы, думаю, задавать подобный вопрос вам даже не придётся: в окончательном предложении будет стоять та цифра, на которую вы рассчитывали, или несколько выше. Меньше вам просто постесняются предложить.
