The Library

I love the library.

As you can probably tell from my (increasingly infrequent and therefore lengthy) book posts, I read a lot. I do not buy all of the books I read, not by a long shot. I couldn't afford it -- not so much the books themselves as the significantly larger house with Beauty-and-the-Beast-sized library (complete with a ladder) that would be required for storage. Although if I ever win the lottery, I am so getting one of those. So a lot of my reading material comes from the library. And I've recently discovered the joys of interlibrary loans -- even if my library doesn't have the book, I can just ask them to get it from another library! It's genius!

My library also has a DVD collection, which keeps me well-stocked in obscure foreign movies and documentaries, and makes me terribly happy.

Add to all this the fact that my local branch is, quite literally, less than a block from my house. Yes, I really do love my library.

They have a quite nice online catalogue, and I have become quite adept at placing holds on books from other branches and waiting for them to come to me at my little local branch. I am way down the waiting list for some very popular books, but that doesn't bother me so much -- I can always log in and watch as I creep slowly up the waiting list. But what drives me bonkers is when there isn't much of a waiting list -- or none at all -- and the book's status goes to "in transit", and I get all excited, and make plans to go and pick it up the next day... only it's still in transit the next day. And the day after that. Drives me absolutely crazy.

I am not usually so bad at delayed gratification, but there's something about that little yellow "in transit" that makes me twitchy....
