What's the matter with kids today?

On a mostly unrelated note, my niece and nephew came with my in-laws on Saturday the 13th when Nana and Poppa came to help Chuck for the 4 days I was going to be at the IFT show in Chicago. Before I left for the show, I became a whirling dervish of making delicious things: I whipped up some homemade marshmallows, hot fudge sauce, and vanilla ice cream for them to enjoy even if I couldn't be there with them.

When I returned, though, I found a container of Friendly's vanilla ice cream in the freezer, and the marshmallows and fudge untouched. Well, part of this was doubtless because the niece and nephew had ended up going home after only one night - the niece got homesick and Poppa drove the kids home on Sunday. But, apparently the ice cream was bought on the Saturday because the kids reportedly would not eat any ice cream but that kind. WHAT. Also, they would not eat tricolor pasta so Chuck has to cook regular pasta for them. DOUBLE WHAT.

Oh, such indulgence! Back in my day, I ate any kind of ice cream there was, even Tofutti, as long as it wasn't a bizarre flavor - vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry were always safe bets, no matter the maker. Even the thin-textured Breyer's would pass muster. And I would be expected to at least take 2-3 bites of the tricolor pasta, or any other food I was wary of, before declaring that I would not eat it (and usually even foods my sister and/or I didn't like required a 2-3 bite minimum before we could expect to be excused/get dessert).

Oh, kids today. Fortunately, Lucia loves ALL pasta, just about all ice cream, and she eats the hell out of broccoli.

kids, food
