Misc. Streams of Consciousness

As usual, a big, fat, long Austra-Slavic LJ entry. You have been warned…

Well, back from holidays and back at uni. And what a joyful ride… seriously, I had a great time away with my family but practically no schoolwork done at all, which means a very tense two or three weeks ahead of me as I try to get everything done! A bit more about the Queensland trip sometime later…

Have you ever had so many Safari/Firefox/IE windows open that you didn’t know how you’d go through them all and close them all? *nods emphatically* I solved that problem by (accidentally) letting my battery go dead flat in the last days of the road trip, thus shutting everything down. Which helps, cause now I don’t have to go through anything at all, though I am worrying a little about what I may have lost. But I guess I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it, if I ever do. Fortunately my open (and unsaved, gasp!) were retained and I opened up word to find three pretty “recovered” documents. Seems that Word is good for something… (ssshhhh, don’t let it hear you say that! ;D)

Kendo, Music, Uni…

Feel crap about skipping kendo this afternoon, especially after being away for a week. I had massage class, and then afterward I felt so tired that I just decided to go home. My shinai need some good honest maintenance and I’ve never done it by myself, I don’t know where to start [hint, hint, fellas, LOL!]. Everything seems to be playing up, my ankle, my knees, my back and neck… bloody everything!

As I will probably mention if and when I ever post an account of the Qld trip, I have become addicted to James Blunt’s album Back to Bedlam. I think it is freaking awesome, although I have taken to skipping tracks 1 and 2 because I still hear them so much on the radio I am scared of overplay and annoyance (like Missy Higgins’ “Scar”, which I enjoy a lot more when I hear it thanks to the fact that it’s not assaulting my eardrums every five seconds) and, to my delight, discovered Wisemen and Goodbye My Lover. All the other songs are brilliant too, but those two, tracks 3 and 4 are the ones I just keep going back to.

Tomorrow I’m going to observe a J1B class for my Second Language assignment. Which will be interesting, to say the least. What scares me is that I might not understand things these guys know/are learning, even though I am two levels ahead of them - and it’s entirely possible. I mean, Pei blows me out of the water, her grammar is pretty awesome and I feel like a moron sometimes! [Woah, there’s that emotional soul-bearing again. Gotta watch that!]

On “Serenity” with little bro, and film mag articles…

I took Jax to see Serenity on Oct 1 and enjoyed it just as much second time around as I did the first time, if not more. I picked up on more little things, got to see great things again (as well as having to sit through the gut-wrenching scenes again… Damn you, Joss Whedon, DAMN YOU!!! … ah, I can’t begrudge the guy that much. I picked up Australia’s Filmink film magazine today for the first time (I considered buying last month’s issue, but didn’t in the end), and what did I find in this spanking new issue but an interview with The Joss himself, complete with a facing picture. I wish it had been out when I went to the screening, I might have asked him to sign it, just to see his reaction. This, just after I’d thought to myself that it was funny that I hadn’t really seen any “moody director shots” of Joss - but there on page 16 of Filmink is what I like to call the self-deprecating ‘You’re really taking a photo of me for this article?’ picture. Semi cool, semi funny - the man is funny to look at, face it, especially when you what kind of dialogue the guy can write - and remarkably down to earth. Filmink rated Serenity as “Worth $14.50” (one of the highest ratings I saw in the entire “new releases” section, even higher than “The Proposition” at $13.50) and gave it a nice review, which is great. The film deserves it, it is a great film. What’s still puzzling me though is the Japanese… and don’t worry, that’s not a spoiler, unless you consider background graphics spoiler-worthy topics. Which I don’t.

Back to Jax. I took him to see the movie and he was continually telling me to shut up as we sat in the cinema waiting for the film to start - I was quoting the Serenity ads, Firefly lines, and singing The Ballad of Serenity and The Hero of Canton softly as we waited. We watched to the very end and heard the … well, is this a spoiler? I dunno. Suffice to say, Firefly fans should stay to the end to hear a reworking of an old favourite. I think he enjoyed it, we were quoting it for the rest of the time I was at home, usually with Jax taking Mal’s line from the TV ads ”You wanna run this boat?” and running with it.

Speaking of which, Jax and his mates seem to be a font of interesting dialogue. I’m seriously considering bugging his pencil case or something, so I can hear all the wacky things they say to each other at school.

I’m sure the there was plenty more I was going to mention, but it’s getting late and I want some sleep! Suffice til next time, it included my growing conviction that ESP exists, the arrival of video cameras (and assorted other items) in Melbourne, concepts for fanfilms, and the inevitability of the uncertainty of life. Hey, does that last item count as an existential comment? Yay me!

Finally though, what crap news about Bali, sad for it to have happened again. And the freaking news reports… “Bali 2”… *splutters* … this is NOT a movie, people.

Grgh!!! … … Calm. Deep breaths.
