End of Winter Review~Psycho Pass and From the New World
Actually this is more an end of fall review because I dropped the few winter anime I was watching except Chihayafuru which is still ongoing.
Anyways not every series has actually ended yet but most only have one episode left. I might do another post for this again next week depending on if I have something to say about those shows or not (I know I am not ready to let go of Shirokuma Cafe).
Anyways the two significant series that ended this week for me were Psychopass & From the New World. I am being purposely vague so there are no spoilers below.
Both these series had a lot of similarities (even in their endings) but in the end SSY pulled ahead of PP for me.
I always felt Psychopass world building was pretty weak (and even nonsensical) but I ignored it as I was entertained and interested in the many ideas Gen was bringing forth. Sadly the ending didn't really tie things together, it felt weak and anti-climatic and I think the weak world building might have hurt it. Looking back I think the series peaked for me around episode 16 (before the big reveal about what the sybil system actually is). Although there were great moments after this, this was probably my favorite episode of the series. Unfortunately I think the ending does downgrade my feelings for the series (although I will always love that 2nd opening).
On the other hand SSY tight world building was really a strength for the series. I think its last episode was really excellent. When I watched it I was expecting something a bit different so maybe I was mildly disappointed in some things but the more I think about it the more I think it was right for the series. There was a lot I guessed but even with that there were still surprises for me in the final episode. The series felt conclusive and tied everything together (plot wise and thematically) but also left me a lot to ponder on and I really couldn't ask for anything more from fiction. I don't think I will ever be able to not associate the From the New World symphony with anything but this series.
