Sherlock S2 Finale

Okay that was excellent and everything I hoped for. Unfortunately I think it will make episodes 1 & 2 of this season look even worse by comparison.

As you can tell from my previous posts I really didn't like episode 1 and while I enjoyed episode 2 more it does seem worse now that I watched this episode.

But really this episode satisfied me on every level. It was by far the best version of The Final Problem I saw and again it goes back to my last post it all hinges on a great portrayal of Watson.

Every other version focuses so much on Sherlock that we really don't get to see what Sherlock's death does to Watson.

Yes the stand off between Moriaty & Sherlock was great and Moriaty's plan to discredit Sherlock worked really well on a dramatic level because it does seem that all Sherlock has is his deduction skills. To write them off as all fake was the perfect way to really get Sherlock to show real anger & fear (unlike in the last episode when the fear was brought on by a drug).

However Moriaty was wrong...Sherlock doesn't only have his name. He has people who truly believe in him: Mrs. Hudson, Lestrade, and especially Watson. Even after Watson is told Sherlock is a fake he doesn't believe it, not for a second. Watson doesn't believe in the consulting detective, he believes in the man.

And my god when Watson said he was so alone before Sherlock came into his life and please don't be dead that really got to my heart. It was such a beautiful scene.

Thankfully for the audience (not for Watson) we see in the end Sherlock is not dead (like in the original story). I say thankfully because I know the series will not come back for a long time and it would be needlessly cruel to have us wait to see if Sherlock was alive or not. The only thing we don't know is how (Sherlock does tell Watson in so many words that it is trick). Except it seems pretty certain that Molly helped Sherlock somehow (which I am glad about and hope that they show that Sherlock sees her as more as a doormat. One of my favorite scenes in the episode was when she said she could see Sherlock was sad when he didn't want John to see. Showing that Molly is perceptive). And despite not being one of the people Moriaty mentioned, I think this episode also showed us that Molly is not invisible and does count (and is actually essential).

On another note Moriaty shoots himself and I at least hope he stays dead. I think the story around him was good but I admit I am not a big fan of this version of the character.

But yeah I feel this episode truly highlighted the great friendship that John & Sherlock had and loved every minute of it.
