Of course no one on my FL cares about Penguin Drum (which makes me sad) but what are you going to do? :)
Probably the darkest imagery of the show yet. We all knew 95 was an important number of the series for awhile but with this episode it's been pretty much confirmed that the Sarin Gas Attacks that took place on March 20th 1995 will play a part in the series (whether literally or figuratively I don't know yet).
It will be interesting to see what Ikuhara has to say about this event in a fictional setting (hopefully without being completely insensitive).
It also seems that there might be more than one meaning to the train motifs. The trains in the series seem to represent a set destination to your fate (ala Night on the Galactic Railroad.) But then the attacks in Japan also took place on subway trains.
I was also thinking about Penguin Drum recently and one of the things I love about the series (the surrealism) is something I probably would not have appreciated or even gotten some years back. There is a lot of random silly things that take place in the show that almost obscure some of its darker themes (aka Crazy Penguin Hijinks). Of course if you actually pay attention some of these silly background things can have deeper meaning or a deeper reflection on the characters in the foreground.
And so I don't make another random post I got my Disappearance of Haruhi DVD yesterday (along with Vol. 4 of Usagi Drop and Vol 26 of the Viz version of Hagaren). I am very excited to watch the movie on an official DVD. XD
