Watching Two Series With All Main Female Casts
Well besides this the two series couldn't be any more different but it's nice all the same :)
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
Okay thanks to the Princesstutu community I am now completely addicted to the new My Little Pony Series. In my opinion it is the best American cartoon since Avatar: the Last Airbender. Of course before I get expectations too high it isn't quite as epic in scope as Avatar but it's still very good.
It's like if America did a slice of life series like Azumanga Daioh just with magical ponies. The series does have the lesson an episode which is typical of American series for kids but what gives this series its charm is the characters are all unique, funny, flawed, and interesting. It also has tons of references from Star Trek TOS to Apocalypse Now. It's cute but not sacchairne.
While MLP is clearly aimed at young girls it has another surprise fanbase. It seems to be popular with the 18-30 male demographic & is apparently a big hit on 4chan. I hope the success of MLP shows American executives that you don't need male leads to make a hit. The upcoming Legend of Korra will also hopefully continue to prove this.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Another series with an all female cast (although that isn't exactly rare in Japan). I heard a lot of good things about this "magical girl" series and saw it was only 12 episodes so I thought I would give it a chance. I am very happy I did because it's quite a good deconstruction of the magical girl genre (and of course I don't want to say more than that). The series makes fine use of its limited episodes and gets into the plot right away. I do think with more episodes the characters could have been slightly better developed but I find all the girls likable & interesting at least. The series has great execution and atmosphere so even when you can see a plot twist coming it's compelling
Of course there are 2 more episodes left and the ending could make or break this series. But I think at this point I can at least say I enjoyed the ride. But I am hoping for a good ending!
