Hogan's Heroes Discussion Stuff

Apr 19, 2010 19:36

Three posts in a day well that's because I am bored and frustrated I can't post on the Hogan's Heroes message board over on ff.net.

Two interesting discussions have been brought up that I wish I could say my piece and since I can't I will be posting about it here:

1) From this post how accurate is Newkirk's cockney accent?

Well first of all I would say any inaccuracies are not because Newkirk is not supposed to really be cockney (which at least one person states) but because Dawson himself is not really cockney and it's possible he could make mistakes. However it's been stated by those involved with the series itself that Newkirk is meant to be a cockney.

I do think Newkirk's cockney accent is not as strong as some fan-ficers make it. And I think if Newkirk wanted to he could easily speak more proper English (well he has done this in the actual series). Although I will say Newkirk's skill at imitating people is really Dawson's skill and in this case I believe character & actor bleed together. Anyways in my personal canon Newkirk would have been raised in the East End but somewhere growing up he was also taught how to speak proper English. But Newkirk being Newkirk he decides to speak with the cockney accent even though he doesn't have to if he didn't want to.

2) From here Carter's love of animals:

This one I actually agree with 96 Hubbles that fandom makes Carter out to be more of an animal lover than he actually is. And while it's true that Carter did eventually want to keep the rabbit in Klink VS the Gonculator (I absolutely adore that episode) he really wanted to eat it at first. And yes it is true that the only two characters we really see take to animals is Lebeau with the dog & Newkirk with the chimp. I am not saying that Carter dislikes animals (he clearly doesn't) but I don't think he is more of an animal lover than any of the others characters. He is certainly not the animal lover of the group.

Although one instance that 96 Hubbles forgot is in Sticky Wicket Newkirk, Carter did want to go to the zoo in his spare time.

And now I am going to watch Nights of Cabiria so I don't post a million more topics tonight.

edit Could someone on my FL who also has an ff.net account please post this link explaining that yes Newkirk is supposed to be a cockney on that topic. I would appreciate it. :)
