The Graveyard Book

This book was fantastic and it's my favorite of the books I read by Neil Gaiman yet. I also really liked Coraline by him but this tops even that. It's a homage to Kipling's Jungle Book that takes place in a graveyard instead of of a jungle and it's extremely clever.

Parts of the book are dark (most notably the opening chapter) but overall it's just a fun and heartwarming read with some very witty prose and a likable main character. The book also had a great ending. Not everything is tied up neatly not everything ends happily ever after but it ends on a somewhat bittersweet note and I really applaud Neil Gaiman for that. Really I loved this book. And I feel bad I took it out of the library because now I really want to own it. So yeah if you are looking for something new to read I definitely recommend this.

And for Lord of the Rings fans on my FL I also really recommend Tolkien's The Children of Hurin. It reads like a Greek tragedy with a nice dose of irony and hubris mixed in so if you are into that then I especially recommend it. But like all of Tolkien's works it is beautifully written. And in this case it is beautifully illustrated by Alan Lee. Whenever I read Tolkien I don't feel like I am reading just a fantasy story but a legend that really was passed down over the eras.
