Finished Neon Genesis Evangelion
So I finished the TV series and End of Evangelion today everlasting_day suggested I watch the movie before episode 25 & 26 of the series. However I decided I wanted to watch it in the order the fans did because I wanted to understand the controversy over the ending of the TV series.
In the end I rated the series a 7.5/10 and the movie a 7/10. I actually going back and forth on my rating for the movie. While I do like the ending of the movie better than the series getting to the ending was painful for me. Whereas the TV series ending sucked but getting to that point was pretty good.
Yeah I don't really think the movie was that great with the exception of the ending and Asuka's last stand and maybe Shinki & Misato's last scene. I definitely think Anno has some issues with all the sex imagery he put in this movie (the scene with Shinki & Asuka in the beginning was completely unnecessary). And then there was all the mumbo jumbo and more sex imagry in the second half.
However I guess I liked that Shinji finally decided to live with others (not as one collective conscious) even if it is painful at times. I also loved the last scene between Asuka and Shinji as either the last people on Earth or the 1st people to wake up from the collective consciousness. It's a powerful last scene despite my feelings for the rest of the movie. I like the ambiguous implications of the ending.
As for the TV series I liked it overall with the exception of the last two episodes. I did feel some things were introduced to fast like Kaworu Nagisa. And then I felt some things like the plotline with Suzuhara were dropped too soon (although episode 18 is actually my favorite in the series).
Overall I am happy I finally watched this. I feel less like a heretic now
Also please explain to me the fandom's obsession with Rei. I don't dislike her or anything but I don't see what is so great about her either.
Now on my random watch 90's anime excusion (I watched Serial Experiment Lain before Eva) I am planning on started Revolutionary Girl Utena next.
On a completely unrelated note I started watching a bunch of fall series but it's way too much (7 might not be too many for some but it is too many for me). All the series I started do show potential but I can't say I am completely sold on any either. The only exception is Nodame Cantabile I will be following that for sure. I am also still following Bonen no Xamdou & Detroit Metal City from previous seasons.
Anyways of the following series please let me know which ones you plan to follow this fall season.

I am not necessarily going to watch things based on what my FL is watching but it might be a factor to help me choose/eliminate some series. I've come to realize that when you are watching something on a weekly basis it is more fun when others are watching it with you.
