So today there was an announcement that there is going to be a Gurren Lagann movie. Most of the fandom is jumping for joy but you know honestly I am not. The movie is going to be a few things
A complete rehash of the series maybe with some new animation: This is absolutely pointless. Besides I would not want to see a 27 episode series condensed into 2 hours. The animation for the series was good enough already
A retelling ala Escaflowne Movie: DO NOT WANT. I hated the Escaflowne movie. Like the Escaflowne TV series the Gurren Lagann TV series was fine the way it was.
A sequel: I highly doubt it but the ending was fine the way it was. Why mess with something that doesn't need messing with?
A prequel: Someone suggested Genome against the Anti-Spiral. This would be awful. I have visions of the Star Wars prequels in my head. A fantasy/sci-fi story where the good guys lose is not entertainment.
The only thing that might interest me if told well is an alternative universe with GARlock Simon. That might be cool. Or a story with what everyone was doing during the 7 years including Viral.
I am sorry if I am being negative. I am just not a big fan of sequels, prequels, and retellings. Why can't things ever be left as they are? Sure there were some excellent sequels (Godfather 2 and Mummy 2 come to mind and I am actually enjoying Slayers Next much more than the 1st series) but seriously we can probably count good sequels on one hand.
It appears that Gainax just wants to milk this series and as a fan I really do not appreciate that. And I am still bitter about Life on Mars. Absolutely perfect series, ending and everything and they had to ruin it with a sequel.
Oh and ADV please release the damn DVDs already. :(
