“Hey, James? Do you want to help me pick out Amber’s birthday present?” Bernd said as he set and set his game controller down and looked at his friend. “I got twenty bucks and I thought we could get yours too.” Bernd flashed his trademark lopsided grin at his best friend.
James thought it over. He was a bit jealous that Bernd always made it seem like his twin was first in his heart, but then all his had to do was give him that look and James’ jealousy would fade away in a heartbeat. “Okay.”
“Awesomeness!”
James watched Bernd put away their controllers and switch off the Nintendo and TV. The two of them headed downstairs and outside, pausing just long enough to put their shoes on and tell Bernd’s young brother Didi where they were going. Grabbing their bicycles, they headed off into town to the local thrift store.
Chaining their bikes up front, James and Bernd went inside the thrift store. Bernd went over to the shopping carts and took one. He pushed it over to where James waited.
“Ready?”
“Yeah… Ummm… Prissy?” James frowned. “Just what are you planning on buying?”
“Dunno yet…” Bernd shrugged, “But I’ll know it when I see it.”
“Okay.” James trailed along as they headed away from the clothes and towards housewares and everything else in the store. They had a good laugh at a velvet Elvis and why would anyone want something like that along, with a hideous Elvis coffee mug. Bernd looked longingly at a vintage Jello mold that he had a feeling Didi would like, while James tried to get his attention.
“Prissy, look.”
“What?” Bernd looked over at him.
James held up a mug that had a woman wearing a bikini on it. “I think it’s the mug Denis was telling us about. You know, the one that when put hot water in it her top disappears.” He waggled his eyebrows at him.
“Awesomeness!!” Bernd grinned. “Think Amber would like it?”
“Uh, yes and no.”
“Oh…”
“Yeah, while she’d probably love it, she’d kill us for giving it to her.”
“True…” Bernd said.
“So let’s get it for Denis and keep looking for Amber.”
“Okay, unless you’d like it, James.”
James put it in the cart. “I do kind of like it.” He chuckled.
“Then let’s get it for you along with something else,” Bernd said, after seeing the mug only cost two dollars. His best friend deserved much more than just that for his birthday.
“Works for me.” James grinned. He got a kick out of the mug and had a feeling his grandmother would too. He was going to be sixteen so naked boobs, even if they were cartoony, were no big deal. Besides, Denis had somehow gotten his hands on one of Uncle Luigi’s girlie magazines, when they were all around thirteen years old, and they had all taken a good look inside. James remembered Julio even had a crush on Miss November.
“Oooo…” Bernd said when he spotted a teapot.
“What?”
“Look! Amber’s going to love this!” Bernd held up a teapot. It was covered in flowers and very girlie.
“Yup!” James said. Despite its very feminine appearance, Bernd was right; Amber would love it.
“And there’s a matching teacup!” Bernd put the teapot in the their cart and carefully picked up the teacup. He handed it to James.
“Sweet! Does it have a saucer?”
“You mean this?” Bernd held up a chipped, but equally floral saucer.
“Yeah. I guess I’ll get her a box of tea to go with it,” James said, placing the teacup and saucer in the cart. He pushed the cart down the aisle, and looking over at the boxes on one of the shelves; James was amazed to find an unopened tin canister of tea. He added it to the cart.
“Let’s go find something for you,” Bernd said.
“Okay,” James replied as they headed over to the clothes. They wandered the aisles, looking for something for James. They paused a few times to admire a t-shirt or two, before finding themselves amongst a group of Hawaiian shirts. There amid the garish prints, was a simple blue one with a few clusters of white hibiscus blossoms and leaves scattered over it.
Bernd grabbed the shirt and held it up. “What do you think?”
“Hmmm…”James thought it over. The shirt looked cool and it was the right size, but it was a close match to James’ listing to the right Mohawk. “You don’t think it clashes?” He pointed to his hair.
Bernd shook his head. “I think it’ll look awesome!” he grinned.
“Okay.”
“Happy birthday, James.”
“Thanks, Prissy,” he said as they headed to the checkout counter.
“Bitte!” Bernd’s grin broadened.
They left the thrift store, their purchase, carefully carried on the bike ride back home.
“Catch you later!” they chorused, going their separate ways.
