“Come in, Prissy,” James said as he floated lazily in the river. “The water’s nice!” He splashed in his friend’s direction.
Bernd stood at the river’s edge. It was a very hot day and the water did look as nice as James said it was, but when he dipped his toes in, he quickly pulled his them out. “It’s too cold, James!”
“You’ll get used to it!” James said.
“I don’t know…”
“Really! You will!” James sent a half-assed splash Bernd’s way. “Just back up and take a running jump!”
Bernd sighed. It was hot and it did look like fun… He turned and took several steps towards where his horse Blitzkrieg grazed. Turning back towards the river, Bernd started running. Reaching the edge of the riverbank, Bernd jumped in. He went under, having slipped on the rocks below, quickly surfacing with a loud gasp.
James, meanwhile, used his hands to paddle over to him. “You okay?”
“Yeah!” Bernd shivered. “I didn’t expect the water to be so cold!”
“You should have jumped in sooner.” James laughed.
Bernd reached out and hung onto the side of James’ inner tube. “Yeah…” he said ruefully. “It is kinda refreshing.”
“Yeah.”
“So let’s swim for a while and then eat lunch.”
“Okay, but don’t forget, I’ve got work at two.”
“Awe…”
“I’m not as lucky as you are,” James said.
“Hunh?”
“Yeah, you can give riding lessons whenever you need money. Some of us have to work at a job where we can’t make our own hours.”
“Oh…” Bernd frowned. “I thought you liked working at the ice cream parlor.”
“I do, but sometimes it would be nice to go swimming when it’s hot and not worry about having to stop and run to work.”
“Oh…”
“Yeah…” Eager to avoid putting a damper on the mood, James splashed at his friend.
“Hey!” Bernd laughed and splashed back.
They played in the water, slowly building an appetite, until they were “starving.” James slipped out of the inner tube, pulling it along beside him. The two of them climbed up the river bank. James stashed the inner tube in the bushes, while Bernd went to get their lunch. They dried off in the sun as they ate the picnic lunch Vati had made them. As soon as they were finished and reasonably dry, they changed back into their clothes, packing their damp swim shorts in Blitzkrieg’s saddle bags. Mounting his horse, Bernd helped James up behind him. Urging the big, black Friesian forward, they set off for Bernd’s house as they chatted away about the fun they had had.
