While doing a Google search for Halloween costume ideas, Amber came across a print of a Victorian lady dressed as a bat. It was the same image that was in the thumbnail to a YouTube video that Bernd had sent her the link to. Curious, she decided to watch it. Twenty minutes later, Amber decided the costume was doable. She even had a black skirt that she was willing to “sacrifice for the cause,” as well as an old set of black sheets to use as extra fabric. All she needed was a pair of black shoes from the thrift store, a bag of extra large zip ties, some black bias tape, black ribbon, black paint, and some sculpting clay from the craft store. She also ordered a pair of black opera gloves from amazon and a wig for Greta and Bernd. Amber figured the video would make a great tutorial and she spent a few days watching it over and over again, until she felt confident enough to attempt making it.

Greta’s dress, on the other hand, was easy to style into something Elvira would wear as it already low cut; all it needed was a slit up the side. They had found it, while searching for a pair of shoes for Amber’s costume at the local thrift store.

Amber gave the video one last watch, while cutting out fabric strips for her skirt. The bat headpiece, she had started the other day, using the sculpey clay Tino gave her, along with bat shaped pin and the little bats for her shoes. At this point, all they needed was to be painted, before being attached to her costume.

Halloween was finally here and Amber quickly got dressed in her costume. Pulling her turquoise hair into a low bun, she put on the bat headpiece on her head, before sitting down to do her makeup.

“Hurry up! Bernd wants to know when we can do his makeup,” Greta said as she breezed into the room she shared with her girlfriend.

“In a minute!” Amber looked over her shoulder at her girlfriend. “You make a very cute Elvira.”

“Danke, but you forgot short. Isn’t she really tall or something?”

Amber shrugged and focusing her attention back on her makeup, she put on the same crimson lipstick Greta wore. “Send him in,” she said as she got up. “Do you know if the kids are ready to go trick or treating?”

“Ja. Bernd and I got them ready.”

“Great! Then we can go as soon as I get his makeup on…” Amber trailed off when Bernd entered the room. She didn’t know whether to laugh or sigh as he looked like an emaciated vampire. She settled on smiling and waved him over.

Bernd sat and closed his eyes. Amber’s fingers, as she lightly stroked on a bit of foundation to darken his very pale skin, felt really good. He let out a contented sigh.

“Wake up, Numbnuts.”

“I’m awake.” He smirked at her. It was so tempting to face-plant into her cleavage, but he knew if he did, it would ruin his makeup and annoy her to no end.

“Sure you are. Now hold still and keep your eyes closed.” Amber took a gel pen eyeliner and drew a circle around his eye that she filled in. She repeated it on the other eye, before grabbing another eyeliner pen and drawing on a mustache. Looking at the picture of Svengoolie on her phone, she added the rest of the painted on details to his face. A fake goatee finished the look. Amber shook her head. He had somehow managed to simultaneously look silly and cute, not that she would tell him. No need to make him feel more awesome than he already felt.

“What?”

“Nothing. Let’s go get Greta and the kids, so we can go trick-or-treating.” Grabbing the rubber chicken they got from the joke shop, she threw it at him.

Bernd deftly caught it with one hand. “Hey! I’ve been looking all over for that!”

“Oh really? Then you should have been able to find it as it’s been sitting over there with Kerwyn and hasn’t moved since you left it there,” Amber said dryly.

“Oh…”

“Yeah,” she said as they left her bedroom. Gathering the kids and Greta, the five of them left to go trick-or-treating.
