Everyone sat around the dining room table, cutting out paper snowflakes. Whenever someone’s hand started hurting, they would take a break and fold the paper into a cone for cutting. Maria, being too small to really make one without getting frustrated, collected the snowflakes into a pile. She watched her mother Greta string yarn through one of the holes on “top” so that they could hang them on the Christmas tree as well as in the windows.

“Would you like to make popcorn garland tomorrow?” Vati said as he got up to hang the snowflakes on the tree.

“Can we, Opa?” Maria said. Her whole face lit up at the thought.

“Can we make enough to eat?” Fritz added as he looked up from the snowflake he was making.

Vati nodded. “Ja.” He smiled and shook his head at Fritz’s father, Bernd, whose ears had perked up at the mention of popcorn. “I’ll make enough that we can hang it outside for the birds to also eat. Anyway, do we have enough snowflakes?”

“I think we need a little more, Opa,” Maria said.

“Okay, Liebchen.” Wolfgang smiled and patted her head, before taking the pile of finished ones Greta handed him.

“Maria, why don’t you help Opa hang them on the tree?”

“Okay, Mutti!” She took her grandfather’s hand and went with him to the den, where the Christmas tree was.

“I think we’re done,” Amber said.

“Yeah,” Bernd agreed. He set his scissors down on the table and cracked his knuckles.

“Good,” Greta said, “I’m getting tired of stringing them.”

“Fiete, can you give the rest of them to Opa?” Amber said.

Fritz nodded. He got up and brought the rest of the snowflakes over to his grandfather.

“Let’s go see what the tree looks like,” Bernd said as he got from the table.

“Okay.”

Greta and Amber got up and followed him into the den.

“Wow!” Bernd said.

“The tree looks nice.” Amber liked the way the snowflakes looked against the dark green boughs.

“Yeah,” Greta said.

“It’ll look awesome when we add some popcorn garland.” Bernd could already picture it in his head.

“Ja!” Greta picked up her daughter. “You and Opa did a good job.”

“Danke!” Maria squirmed in her mother’s arms, so she put her down.

“All we need is for you, Old Man, to go hide the pickle for the children to find,” Greta said to Wolfgang.

“I’ll do it later when they’re asleep.”

“Don’t forget the angel, Vati,” Bernd said as he sat down on the couch.

“I’ll add her then.” Wolfgang sat next to his son.

Amber and Greta sat in the chairs, while the kids made themselves comfortable on the floor. Bernd reached for the remote and switched on the TV. Everyone settled back to watch one of the many holiday specials that were on in the weeks leading up to Christmas.
