James and Cesare opened the gifts Bernd, Amber, and the kids dropped off. Both uncles got a “World’s Best Uncle” t-shirt from Maria, while Fritz gave each of them a video game. James reached for his last present, which was a gift from Bernd and James’ twin sister Amber.
“What did you get?” Cesare said as he unwrapped the gift he got from James. “Thanks,” he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm; when he opened the box, revealing an Italian cookbook. He grumbled in Italian about how James would not know ravioli from tortellini and if he thought he was going to get eggplant parmigiana for dinner, he had another thing coming.
“Glad you like it,” James said. He was pleased at the reaction his gag-gift got. James chuckled at the movie Amber and Bernd gave him. It was one he had wanted to see.
“Scusa?” Cesare said, before repeating it in English, “What?” He reached for one of his gifts, which also happened to be from James. Opening it, he smiled when he saw a boxed set of Gordon Ramsey’s “Kitchen Nightmares” on DVD. It was his all-time favorite show and he was glad James had remembered that. Visions of feeding James eggplant parmigiana as a “thank you” danced in his head.
James held up a DVD copy of Snow Shark: Ancient Snow Beast. “While I think this was mostly Bernd’s idea, there’s a touch of Amber in it, as it’s a horror movie.”
“Yeah?” Cesare set his gifts aside and got up. “Does this mean you want me to go make some popcorn while you pop that into the DVD player?” As much as he wanted to watch Gordon Ramsey, he decided to let James have his fun first.
“Please?” James smiled at him.
Cesare let out a long suffering sigh. “Okay…” He made a metal note to forget the eggplant; tonight, he would make them something simple like spaghetti and meatballs as he headed towards the kitchen. Cesare was glad he listened to his younger brother Tino and learned how to can his own sauce. As for meatballs, he had two bags of homemade ones still in the freezer. While the popcorn was popping, Cesare took some meatballs and left them on a plate on the counter to thaw. A few minutes later, he and James were sitting on the couch, chowing down on popcorn and a few cold ones, while they watched his new movie.
