Bernd pushed the stroller while Amber held on to little Fritz, who was dressed like a bumblebee. It was Fritz’s first real Halloween and she was determined to do it right. So Bernd, who had let the pink fade from his hair, wore a pair of white bunny ears, a white t-shirt, black hoodie, and jeans, along with a large “pocket watch” that was made out of cardboard that hung from some gold Mardi Gras beads around his neck in a hip-hop version of the white rabbit. Amber as much as she wanted to dress up in something gory, toned things down by dressing up as Wednesday Addams. They went house to house, Bernd waiting on the sidewalk, while Amber went door to door with Fritz and the other neighborhood kids who happened by at the time.

“You should have seen it, Bernd!” Amber said. “Fritz clapped his hands and said, ‘dee-dee” and the old biddy gave us a ton of candy!”

“Yeah? You sure it wasn’t cuz he thought she looked like my brother?” He chuckled, thinking of his brother’s and his boyfriend’s old lady and man costumes for the party they were going to.

“Who knows? Maybe he really was trying to say trick-or-treat.”

“He’s heard it often enough,” Bernd teased. Halloween was Amber’s favorite holiday and she loved to go all out. He remembered all the parties she threw, which at first were just the two of them, Amber’s brother James, his brother Dieter, their quazi-cousin Tino, and stack of old horror movies, which used to scare the bejeebies out of Bernd when they were in middle school, to the dances they held at their high school, to the more adult parties they used to host until Fritz was born. So much had gone into this moment, from endless hours of costume planning, to determining when was the best time to put Fritz down for a nap so that he would be awake to enjoy the festivities, to how best to divvy up the tons of candy they were sure to get. Then there were the endless pictures his father had taken before they had left.

“Hey! There’s nothing wrong with a holiday where you get free candy! And get to be as creepy as you want too!” she said with a smile.

“Nope.” Bernd grinned.

“Anyway, let’s go to that house! They really went all out with the decorations!” Amber hurried towards a house with a large blow-up pumpkin and Frankenstein on the lawn. They also had a smoke machine, with bed sheet ghosts hanging from the tree in their yard, and they piped Halloween style music through a hidden speaker. As they approached the house, there was a pair of legs complete with “ruby” slippers positioned next to it, so that it looked like the house had fallen on the Wicked Witch of the East. There were also tons of fake spider webs strewn all over the bushes.

“Okay.” Bernd followed more sedately behind. When Amber turned around to come back, Bernd had his camera ready and snapped several pictures of them. “Get anything good?”

“Yeah! They gave us a ton of Sweetarts!” Amber beamed. Not only was the house decorated awesomely in her humble opinion, but the homeowner who handed out the candy was dressed like a witch. Even better, they had her favorite candy and gave her several handfuls of it too. They even knew she was supposed to be Wednesday Addams and had asked why her “husband” wasn’t dressed like Pugsley.

Bernd laughed. “You mean they gave you a ton of Sweetarts.”

“Well, yeah!” Amber laughed too.

Fritz looked sleepily up at her. He started to fuss as he was very tired and had had enough of being carried and fawned over. He wanted his crib and he wanted it now.

Amber tried soothing him to no avail. She looked at Bernd and sighed. “I guess we’d better go now.”

“We’ve got a decent haul, so yeah. You want to put him in the stroller?”

“Yeah.” Amber put Fritz in the stroller. She picked through the candy for a packet of Sweetarts while Bernd pushed the stroller as they made their way back to where they had left the car. By the time they reached it, Fritz was asleep and several pieces of candy were gone. They ate more of it on the drive home, the two of them agreeing it will be even more fun next year when they take little Fritz trick-or-treating again.
