"oh, come on, baekhyun," yixing whined as he bounced and pulled at baekhyun's hand. "you've been stalking him for three months now, for god's sake."
baekhyun's face morphed into that of an evil bunny and he turned to look at his best friend. "excuse you, zhang yixing. the term is researching, not stalking. you're making me sound like a perverted, horny teen."
"whatever, baixian," yixing rolled his eyes. "grow your balls and ask him out already."
baekhyun chuckled when his chinese name rolled off yixing's tongue; a tell-tale sign that yixing was growing tired of coaxing him to grow his balls every time. baekhyun didn't mind, though. yixing nagged at him like a devoted mother but at the end of the day, he knew that the other would let him cling onto him and dutifully hear him whine his heart out. baekhyun grinned back when yixing's lips curled into a gentle smile.
"i will definitely ask for his number next time!" baekhyun suddenly announced, his fist soaring in the air victoriously.
"sure but please grow your balls first."
it seemed to baekhyun that it was easier said than done when his feet halted in front of the small bookshop. he gulped, peeking at the transparent glass window to look for a certain someone. he pressed his palms on the window pane, nose almost meeting the glass when a deep voice suddenly startled him.
"baekhyun-ssi? what are you doing?"
baekhyun stumbled on his feet as he straightened up, heat flooding his face and running up to the tips of his ears. the tall man in front of him cocked his head slightly as he placed a stack of books on the counter.
"oh. uh, hi! ch-chanyeol-ssi!" baekhyun sputtered, his eyes looking at everywhere but chanyeol. baekhyun wanted to kick at himself.
"are you looking for something?"
"y-yeah. in fact, i'm looking for the korean translation of this book," baekhyun said, handing chanyeol a small piece of paper.
chanyeol took it, barely noticing baekhyun's flushed face when their fingers briefly brushed. he pushed the black-rimmed glasses up the bridge of his nose as he scanned the paper.
"norwegian wood, by haruki murakami?" chanyeol pondered aloud, his eyebrows furrowing as he tried to search his memory. baekhyun's heart did a mini somersault as he stared at chanyeol's concentrated expression.
"it's a great novel! i'll try to look through our store for the original korean translation. come back in a few days, okay?" chanyeol said, grinning brightly as he pocketed the paper and baekhyun died a little. "oh, where's your friend? yixing...ssi? is it?"
"yixing has dance practice every weekend," baekhyun replied, feeling his head swim in the clouds. chanyeol nodded briefly and waved goodbye before disappearing into the shop.
baekhyun screamed in his head.
'i need your number!'
chanyeol was the owner of the small bookshop in the quiet suburban town. baekhyun had always liked chanyeol since the first time he laid his eyes on him. baekhyun loved everything about him; his large glasses, his unkempt curly hair that bounced every time he moved, his huge build that easily towered over baekhyun, his deep voice. then, baekhyun realized that he was falling head-over-heels for the man when chanyeol saved him from a toppling bookshelf as he struggled on his toes to get a book. baekhyun could only stare back, dumbfounded when a few books fell on chanyeol's head as the latter effortlessly pushed the shelf back to its original position. baekhyun was unable to utter a single 'thank you' and yixing had to drag him back to the shop after he bawled his eyes out at him.
"you can kick me if i still couldn't ask for his number today," baekhyun said as he pulled a reluctant yixing to chanyeol's bookshop.
"how did i get myself into this?" yixing muttered. "and baixian, since when did you read haruki murakami?"
"oh shut up, yixing. i need to impress."
"like you haven't been trying to do that already," yixing snickered playfully, earning him a slap in the arm.
when they reached the shop, chanyeol was cleaning up the checkout counter. he beamed at the sight of them and baekhyun blushed a little.
"i've found the book that you requested. please, follow me," chanyeol said, smiling widely. yixing smiled reassuringly at baekhyun as he gave his friend a small push.
baekhyun's heart thumped wildly in his chest as he stared at chanyeol's back. he was sure that his face was unbearably red at that moment. chanyeol stepped into a small room at the back of the shop and baekhyun waited until he came back with a worn book in his hand.
"this is the last copy that we have," chanyeol handed baekhyun the book, pages parched with yellows and browns. "and, uh, i wrote a note for you."
baekhyun's eyes widened and he couldn't help himself from smiling at the sight of a flustered chanyeol. carefully, he lifted the cover of the book and found a small note inside. feeling his heart skip a beat, he opened it.
baekhyun-ssi.
i'd really love to get to know your friend, yixing. ((i've been crushing on him! ^///^))
i'm hoping for him to give me a call anytime he's available.
at the bottom of the note was a scrawl of numbers alongside a messy signature. baekhyun's breath hitched and he felt his eyes sting. his eyes then shifted to chanyeol; the tall man had a dazzled gaze fixed on yixing, the other being oblivious of the situation as he hummed a tune while skimming a bookshelf.
"ch-chanyeol-ssi," baekhyun choked out, trying to sound calm. "i-- i will help you. yixing is my best friend. i will help you to get closer to him."
chanyeol's eyes crinkled in happiness and he smiled a smile so bright it made baekhyun's heart wrench. as baekhyun turned to look at yixing -- his friend was now looking at them with curious eyes -- he knew that he wouldn't regret it.
