kris shakily reached out a hand towards the camera, trying to fight the terrible pain in his head as he dragged himself on the rough road. he could hear chanyeol and baekhyun running to him but his mind was focused on reaching the camera and when he did, he turned its lens towards him.
kris felt hot, sticky liquid trickling down his face and he tried his best to quirk his cracked lips, tried his best to spend the last remaining seconds of his life smiling at the camera. he managed to choke out a few words.
"i love you."
everyone in campus knew the three inseparable best friends: chanyeol, kris and baekhyun. chanyeol and kris were childhood friends -- the two had insisted that they were actually long-lost brothers -- and it was no surprise that they ended up together in the same university. then, baekhyun came along.
baekhyun was in the same course as chanyeol's. when kris was first introduced to baekhyun, he was too mesmerized by the other's smile and didn't realize that he was staring until chanyeol poked him in the cheek. baekhyun was so beautiful that kris had a hard time to breathe. the shorter boy had lively eyes and even livelier smiles. kris thought he could drown in those eyes. then, kris noticed it.
chanyeol liked baekhyun.
his friend had never been tired of talking until someone shushed him but when there was baekhyun, chanyeol was reduced to a nervous, stuttering mess. he would push his black-rimmed glasses up the bridge of his nose countless times and grin until his cheeks hurt whenever baekhyun breathed the same air as him.
one night, when kris was on the way to chanyeol's room for a casual hangout session, he saw two familiar figures in the garden. he didn't mean to pry but his feet wouldn't budge. he felt like his heart was sliced into a million pieces when the shorter of the two pulled the other down and kissed him.
it was baekhyun and chanyeol.
kris turned away when he felt a painful sting in his eyes and let his feet brought him back to his room as the cold night wind caressed his wet cheeks.
"come on, kris, let's go together," chanyeol wailed as he plopped himself down on kris's bed. "it will be dull without you."
"i have so much work to do, chanyeol. i'm sorry. maybe next time?" kris said, offering an apologetic smile to his friend who was now rolling all over his bed in protest.
"that's what you always said. next time, next time, next time. i want the three of us to go together," chanyeol pouted, making a kicked-puppy expression. kris chuckled as he turned back to his desk.
"nah, i'll pass. i'll just be an intruder. i don't need to see you guys flaunting all your romances in front of me," kris said jokingly, but deep in his heart, he meant every word that he just uttered. chanyeol and baekhyun had been dating for a few months now. kris's heart had been hurt, but if that meant he could see his two friends happy and in love, he had nothing to complain.
"i'll get baekhyun to persuade you," chanyeol said as he fished out his phone. he then shoved it in kris's face and kris took it as he heard baekhyun's tentative 'hello' from the phone.
it took just 10 seconds for baekhyun to get kris to say 'yes'.
kris held the pink camera in his hands steadily as he recorded his two friends running on the beach. he couldn't help but smile when chanyeol tackled baekhyun to the sandy ground and lifted him on his shoulder easily. kris chuckled to himself when baekhyun screamed as chanyeol pretended to throw him into the sea.
"kris, save me from this giant!"
kris lifted his head from the camera and looked at baekhyun, who was laughing obnoxiously loud when chanyeol suddenly tripped and fell to the ground, causing the shorter boy to land on top of him. chanyeol gave a scowl before craning his neck to kiss baekhyun, silencing his lover.
kris ignored the painful tugging in his heart as he clicked the shutter.
kris loved his two best friends and was in love with one of them. he often thought that his feelings for baekhyun will change the nature of their friendship so he kept quiet about it. he could contain his feelings now but he was afraid that someday he wouldn't be able to. he would just intrude their relationship; he would just hurt everyone's heart.
kris stepped back and scanned the area. it was a beautiful flower farm located near the roadside. chanyeol and baekhyun were playing with the flowers and kris wanted to capture the whole scenery. he held the camera and took some steps back.
and a few more steps.
he smiled when he saw chanyeol and baekhyun waving frantically at him, shouting something. what is chanyeol pointing at? kris frowned and he turned to the direction--
and then something hit him. was it a car? a truck? kris didn't see.
he felt himself being brutally thrown to the road and he barely heard chanyeol and baekhyun screaming. then, he saw the camera, lying near him.
kris's hand reached out to it.
baekhyun gently cradled the pink camera in his hands. he took out the memory card and began playing the video that kris recorded. he smiled to himself, watching the moments when there were still three of them. at the end of the video, baekhyun's eyes widened and he froze in his seat, tears streaming down his face as he stared at the glaring screen.
"baekhyun. hey, what's wrong?"
chanyeol, who had just entered the room shook baekhyun gently. he looked at baekhyun's laptop and replayed the video. wide-eyed, he dropped to his knees when he listened to the last sound coming from the video.
'i love you. baekhyun.'
