Chapter forty five.
Now. Way, way, way, way, way, way, way back at the beginning of the book it was mentioned that there was a vampire ballet that Jean-Claude had invited. It was the reason why all these vampire masters had shown up. To see it. To prevent them from in-fighting, Jean-Claude came up with the Brilliant, for a given value of brilliant, idea of distracting them by offering up Anita. Basically saying that she needs a new boy toy and so, they would instead of trying to cause trouble with themselves they would try and cause trouble with Anita.
Anyone remember that? No? Oh well.
So. They get ready for the ballet. It requires a full page to describe what they're wearing. Lots of black and sparkly diamonds that cost a lot of money. And corsets. For both of them. The others barely get a description beyond black tuxes with different color vests.
They run the red carpet, it turns out the Master from Hollywood is there and I burst out laughing. Hollywood isn't even a separate city from Los Angeles but it's smack dab in the middle of LA. That, Santa Monica, Culver City, West Hollywood, Malibu. All of those places? Los Angeles. No. Really. Seriously. If I were the Master of Los Angeles? I'd have taken over all of those places. They wouldn't have a chance. Really. Los Angeles is too fucking huge. Second largest city in the United States Huge. The other cities wouldn't be able to support a Master.
Population numbers:
Santa Monica: ~91,124
West Hollywood: ~37,000
Culver City: ~38,816 (And it's surrounded by LA)
Malibu: ~12,575
Los Angeles: 3.8 MILLION.
Yeaaaaah. Someone doesn't understand the LA area at all. Because Hollywood =/= LA.
*stops being a pissy Angeleno*
Blah, blah, blah, they get to their seats. There are lots of body guards, Wicked and Truth draw the short end of the stick as they have to stand guard and not watch the ballet. There are lots of guards. hyena, rats and wolves are guarding the place. No lions. Probably because Joseph actually thinks that they're, you know, human.
Anita is shielded up there are vampires. Jean-Claude is as giddy as a school boy about to ejaculate for the first time. This is making Anita nervous. She's looking around seeing Asher's "froth of hair" and tension. I imagine if I had frothy hair, I'd be tense too.
The vampires of the ballet are trying to roll everyone -including the vampires- so, Anita uses her pretty powers to try and unroll the were-guards. She goes to the leaders of the various weres, Richard, Micah, etc. I find it horribly unsurprising that Anita is unaffected by the rolling that the vampires are doing, even though everyone but the more powerful vampires are under their control.
But then again she is just that special.
Jean-Claude manages to wake up his own vampires by using some of Anita's powers. And then a vampire walks in. Obligatory paragraph of description here:
He was tall, and meaty in an athletic sort of way, not fat, and how does athletic = fat? just physically bigger than I liked my men. Tall and broad the way Richard was, but unlike Richard, this one knew he was big and liked it. He moved in a glide that was already a kind of dance. Most of h is body was nude, just enough covered by his leotard to not get him arrested. His upper body was beautiful even by my standards You have no standards Careless blond curls covered to just below his ears, framing his face that was more handsome than beautiful. He put all that beauty into his face so that the gaze of it was like a blow, or that's what he tried for.. Claudia made a small, helpless sound. He'd rolled her that quick.
I believe she's able to resist his charms because he's not a pretty poofter boy like Auggie and the others. Just like she's able to resist Richard. She's not taken in by handsome men. She says that he would be able to roll her unlike Auggie, but if I recall, Auggie did roll her. She has a selective memory.
She sees him and realizes that there's something bigger waiting in the wings.
