Chapter 9 -- Falling For You

Jaejoong hobbled up the steep climb and was panting when they first started out. He was strong and worked out, but endurance when walking upwards was not his strong point. Changmin kept a close eye on him and could see that he was starting to struggle; even he was starting to struggle. Sighing, he went up to Jaejoong and grabbed the smaller man's bag, shocking the guy.

“Hey! Give that back!” Jaejoong shouted.

“You’re such a weakling and I would hate for you to die, so I’ll carry it,” Changmin said.

“I am not weak,” Jaejoong retorted.

“Says the girl,” Changmin countered and Jaejoong glared at him.

“And I am not a girl!” he shouted and stomped up the mountain.

Changmin smirked and readjusted the bags. Jaejoong definitely got more spunk in him and was looking better than anyone else now that he did not have a big pack to carry. It made Changmin feel great that he was helping his love out.

Halfway up the mountain, they decided to take a break from hiking in a flat patch. There were only a few trees in this part and a big rock centered in the middle that Jaejoong claimed since he was easily the first one there besides Yunho.

Changmin stood next to the rock and dropped their stuff on the ground before he lifted himself up. “You’re not allowed on here,” Jaejoong stated and started shoving Changmin off. The taller boy kept steady and remained on the rock much to Jaejoong’s annoyance.

“Come on, you know that I deserve some rock time considering I helped out a pathetic soul like yourself,” Changmin said and Jaejoong gave a really forceful shove, sending him right off the rock.

“Ow! You’re such a brute,” Changmin complained, rubbing his backside from the painful crash.

“I don’t care what you think,” Jaejoong said, crossing his arms with a huff, acting like a total princess.

“Well, fine then,” Changmin said, standing up. He picked up Jaejoong’s bag and grinned wickedly. “I think I’ll just toss your bag off the cliff then.”

“You wouldn’t dare!” Jaejoong exclaimed.

“Oh, I just might,” Changmin taunted.

Jaejoong hopped off the rock and chased after Changmin who kept his bag out of reach. He laughed at Jaejoong’s useless attempts to get the bag as he held it high in the air. Not paying attention to anything but the fun/annoyance that they were sharing, they approached the cliffs edge.

“Hey, get away from there!” Yunho shouted, but it went on deaf ears. Taking another attempt, Jaejoong jumped for the bag, but Changmin swiftly dodged it. Jaejoong tried stabling his footing, but the ground cracked from the disturbance and gave way.

Changmin watched in slow motion as Jaejoong began falling backwards. Without any thought, Changmin reached out and grabbed Jaejoong, encircling his arms around the lithe body, holding him tightly, falling with him.

Using his tall body to an advantage, Changmin enveloped Jaejoong completely, trying his best to block him from the deadly rocks. The bag still trapped on his right on blocked a few of the jagged rocks, but Changmin let out a small cry when his body collided painful against a boulder and he was rendered unconscious.

Jaejoong could feel Changmin’s grip getting looser. His hands that were latched desperately onto his shirt were the only thing keeping them together. He had heard the faint painful cry from Changmin and within seconds, their bodies connected with the treetops, crashing through the branches. Changmin could no longer protect Jaejoong and they both got cut up from the ruthless forest as they tumbled to the floor.

A dull thud echoed when they finally landed. Jaejoong had landed on top of Changmin and his eyes were completely blank. He was totally out of it and it took a moment before he could move. He raised himself slightly, groaning in agony. He tried to shift a bit more off of Changmin, but the second he moved his right leg, sheer pain racked through his body. Tears filled his eyes, but he forced himself to get off Changmin. He would deal with his leg in a minute. He needed to see how Changmin was doing.

Jaejoong gasped. Changmin’s right arm that still had Jaejoong’s bag around it was twisted in an awkward position, no doubt broken. His right leg was torn up pretty badly and Jaejoong wondered if that too was broken. His clothes were all torn and were beginning to soak in blood from the many gashes all over his body.

Quickly, Jaejoong pressed his fingers against Changmin’s neck and he waited for a couple seconds, closing his eyes and hoping for a pulse. He slowly calmed himself down and he felt a faint pulse. He brushed his damp cheeks, trying to rid his many tears. He needed to contain himself and try to help Changmin in any way possible. He knew that he should not move him, so the only thing he could think of was to clean Changmin’s many wounds.

He did his best to ease his bag off of Changmin’s twisted arm without disturbing him whatsoever. He opened his bag up, grabbed a towel and began to gently wipe off the blood that continuously poured. Tears dripped down his cheeks once more. No matter how much he tried, he could not stop them. Changmin was protecting him. Changmin took the full force of that fall to try and make sure he was not hurt.

“Why did you do that?” Jaejoong asked in a whimper. He twisted the cap off his water bottle to dampen the towel, cleaning off as much blood as he could before he went back to wiping down Changmin’s scrapes. There was so much blood and Jaejoong wept over it all. He just wanted Changmin to open his eyes and tell him that he was just playing a cruel joke and that he was perfectly fine.

Shuffling away from Changmin, Jaejoong went through his bag once more and pulled out a small blanket. As carefully as possible, Jaejoong went back to the wounded teenager while bundling up the blanket and placed it beneath Changmin’s head. Jaejoong was happy that there was no fresh blood on his heads when he pulled away from Changmin’s head. At least he knew there was not much head damage.

Jaejoong sighed and looked up at the mountain cliff. There still were not on level ground and were covered by the forest area. He could only hope that someone would find them quickly to get Changmin to safety.

Settling himself against the cliff’s edge, Jaejoong closed his eyes and let out another sigh. He was totally exhausted and just wanted to sleep after all he went through in the past half hour. However, he opened his eyes to see Changmin and wondered if he should fall asleep or not. Something dire might occur and Jaejoong would not be awake.

Reaching out to his bag, he grabbed his phone out and set the alarm on it. There was absolutely no reception in the camping area and his mother told him that it would be pointless to bring, but it was still an essential for Jaejoong. With the alarm set for twenty minutes, Jaejoong allowed himself to drift off to a much needed rest.

~*~*~*~*~*~

The alarm went off and Jaejoong jumped slightly before he grabbed the phone to turn the tune off. He rubbed his tired eyes and looked at the forest surrounding him. His eyes landed on the figure lying beside him and he was happy to see that there was not much more blood that had escaped through the gashes on Changmin’s body.

Jaejoong wondered what he should do. He did not have really anything that he could use in the wilderness. Changmin was right. He really did not have the proper materials for their trip. Thinking more about that, Jaejoong got to Changmin’s bag and opened it up, hoping that there would be something inside there that he could use.

He found a compass which would be useful if he had any sense of direction. Storing it away, Jaejoong pulled out a flashlight and thought of an idea. He could turn it on at night and hope that the light would be seen. At least there was one thing he could do.

He was happy that Changmin had packed a lot of food. He ripped open an energy bar and gobbled it down. Since he was pretty much dying of hunger, he decided to have three more before looking through Changmin’s bag once more. He wished that Changmin had somehow managed to pack a tent or something, but there was only a towel and one change of clothes for emergency.

Jaejoong zipped the pack up once more and set it beside his own. He brought his knees to his chest and cradled them in his arms, rocking back and forth slightly, trying to think of what he could do next. He could read the magazines in his bag, but at that moment he really could not care less about the stars in there.

“If you were awake, you’d probably just be teasing me,” Jaejoong mumbled to himself. “I actually wouldn’t mind that right about now.”

He glanced at Changmin, hoping that his words might have awoken him, but there was no movement. Jaejoong sighed and set his phone up once more for another nap. He leaned back against the rocky edge and closed his eyes once more, letting himself drift off to sleep.
