Chapter 8 -- Finding A Way To Jaejoong's Heart
Changmin got up on shaky legs and started walking over to Jaejoong. He could only question himself on what the heck he was doing the entire way there. He really wanted to turn back around, but he knew that he needed to make a stand - a very small stand.
He finally shook his thoughts away as he looked down at a sitting, sorrowful Jaejoong. The beautiful man looked up to Changmin and grimaced. “I really don’t want to deal with you right now,” Jaejoong said, but Changmin ignored him and sat across from him.
“You looked like you were about to cry,” Changmin said in a gently voice. “You okay?”
“Why do you care?” Jaejoong asked back with a snap.
“I don’t like seeing anyone depressed, even you,” Changmin said. He was really trying hard not to tease Jaejoong, but after so many years spent doing that, it was difficult to just stop. “Want to tell me what’s going on?”
Jaejoong eyed Changmin weirdly. He never got to see this caring side of Changmin. The guy was always a jackass that lived only to make his life hell. However, there was the time when Changmin ran to the nurses to get help for him after he had a massive panic attack after Yoochun broke up with him. He could have just turned away, but Changmin helped him.
“Am I such an unlovable person?” Jaejoong asked, his cheeks reddening out of embarrassment for asking such a question.
“Why would you ever think that?” Changmin asked back in complete shock. Jaejoong was not only exceptionally gorgeous; he was sweet and caring towards everyone (except Changmin of course).
“Well… Yoochun broke up with me,” Jaejoong started. “Yunho looked repulsed when I even suggested doing something with him. No one wants me.”
“Hey, Yoochun is a dumbass who doesn’t know what he gave up,” Changmin stated. “Plus, Yunho is like twice your age. Do you really even think that he would want to be with a kid? If you were older, I’d bet he would totally go after you. You can seriously have anyone you want.”
Jaejoong frowned and looked down at his now cold meal. Yunho did say that he would go out with him if he was older. “Do you really think that I could have anyone?” he asked with a small smile.
“Yeah,” Changmin assured him, but he wanted to add that he wanted Jaejoong to have only him. But seeing that smile forming on Jaejoong’s face once more was good enough. “Now, don’t get used to this pep talk, shrimp. I just don’t want to pick on a gloomy lump.”
Jaejoong’s smile was replaced with a frown instantly. “You just had to ruin everything,” he said. “To think, I thought you might actually be a good person, but I guess you’re just too evil to ever be good.”
“At least you’ve figured that out,” Changmin said and then stood up from the table. “Now that I’m done here, I’m going to bed. You’re presence made me lose my appetite.”
“Fuck off,” Jaejoong glowered and Changmin chuckled as he walked away. Jaejoong merely rolled his eyes at Changmin’s disappearing appearance and continued eating. He felt a fighting spirit back inside after bantering with Changmin for a bit.
Back inside the tent, Changmin sat on his sleeping bag and sighed. His heart was racing and he could not believe that he actually had that long of a civil conversation with Jaejoong. If he had not begun that little bickering at the end, he knew he would surely explode. He wanted to just claim Jaejoong, telling him that he did not need anyone else because he was right there, ready for him.
Lying down, Changmin closed his eyes and then rolled onto his side to stare at Jaejoong’s sleeping bag. He wondered if he could try to be a little nicer to Jaejoong, but he immediately negated that thought. He knew that he would definitely let slip that he truly loved the guy if he started being nice. Too confused with what to do, Changmin closed his eyes once more, shutting down his thoughts and fell asleep.

The next day was a hike up a mountain. Yunho was excited to start walking up there, but he could easily see that he was one of the few that were interested in hiking up the steep mountain. “It’ll be fun,” Yunho assured them. “There are many things to see up there and the forest area is really lovely.”
Jaejoong was even skeptical about that. Sure, he found the scenery lovely, but was it really worth it to climb up the mountain? He sighed and then saw Yunho stretching out his legs for the long walk. Oh, it was definitely worth it.
Changmin eyed Jaejoong and scowled at the camp leader who was showing off those long legs. “I thought you said you weren’t into long-legged guys,” Changmin said.
“Yunho’s different,” Jaejoong stated. “His legs are heavenly.”
“And what are mine?”
“Yours are dreadful sticks.”
“Hey, my legs are glorious. I should be thankful I don’t have stubby ones like yours.”
“Mine are perfect.” Changmin wanted to agree instantly, but bit his tongue. Jaejoong waited for another snide comment, but when he did not get any, he turned to Changmin with a questioning gaze. “What? You agree?”
“Please, your legs are so ugly I’m glad they’re so short so that I don’t have to look at them.”
Jaejoong growled and stomped away from the tall guy. Changmin chuckled and was about to follow after Jaejoong when a hand was placed on his shoulder to hold him back. He turned around and saw Yoochun staring back at him. Changmin immediately shrugged the hand off, not wanting Yoochun to touch or even be near him.
“Junsu said that you’re going to try going for Jaejoong,” Yoochun said. “I really don’t think that insulting him is the way to his heart.”
“Shut up,” Changmin sneered. “I don’t need any advice from someone like you.”
“Someone like me?” Yoochun repeated. “People are allowed to love other people. I loved Jaejoong; I really did, but I fell for Junsu. It didn’t matter what I did. Junsu always came out on top. That wasn’t fair to Jaejoong so I ended it. All I want is some peace.”
“Maybe you should just keep your distance,” Changmin told him. “Both Jaejoong and I really don’t want to see you around.”
“What if I tell you a way to get Jaejoong instantly?” Yoochun asked.
Changmin was stunned. “There’s a way?”
“Yes, and I can tell you if you’d just let me help you. All I want is for Jaejoong to be happy and if you promise to make him happy, I will do whatever I can to make sure you get him.”
“I promise I can make him happier than anyone,” Changmin swore. He really was amazed that in a split second, he had found a common ground with Yoochun.
“If you happen to be alone with him and it’s a bit cold, give him your jacket,” Yoochun said.
“That’s kind of corny,” Changmin said not really believing the guy. “Besides, it’s summer. I’m not wearing a jacket.”
“Well, Jaejoong is the type that takes everything to heart,” Yoochun said. “When I first tried asking him out, he refused. But then we were alone in a park at night and it was a bit cold that night so I gave him my jacket. After that, I just asked him out again and he agreed.”
“I seriously doubt that if I give him my jacket, he would forget all the years of us fighting,” Changmin said dejectedly.
“I’m telling you that if you do that, he’ll definitely warm up to you at least” Yoochun assured him. “You can even keep up your attitude towards him. Just make sure you’re doing something kind for him and not even your snarky comments will ruin the moment.”
Changmin nodded in thought. He was hoping that he would be able to keep up with his snark because that was pretty much the only way he knew how to speak to Jaejoong. “I guess I’ll try it out,” Changmin said.
“And one more thing…,” Yoochun started, wearing a heavy look. “I want you to make sure that you always take care of him. Remember when I broke up with Jaejoong and he needed to be checked out by the nurses because of a panic attack? Well, Jaejoong has those frequently. They’re not always that bad, but sometimes it does reach that level. Ever since his little brother and father passed away, his mother has been pushing him to be the epitome of perfection. He can’t have anything wrong in his life whatsoever. His only escape in that is the fact that he’s gay. That’s why when he lost me, it affected him so much. I was his only escape.”
Changmin felt his heart clench. Striving for perfection was impossible. Besides, Jaejoong was his own perfection just the way he was, but knowing that Jaejoong really wanted everything to be perfect made Changmin’s gut squirm. For so long, he had been tearing Jaejoong down with his comments, telling him plainly all the time that he was nowhere near perfection. He wondered if Jaejoong ever had any attacks after any comments he had made.
“Don’t worry,” Yoochun suddenly said. “Jaejoong hasn’t had any attacks from your stupid comments. I was always worried that he would, but he only ever got really angry. In fact, you’ve saved him from a few attacks. Whenever he only got an average score on a test, Jaejoong would start panicking over what his mother would say, but you would immediately come over and tease the crap out of him and all his worries would just be turned into anger at you.”
“So I inadvertently saved him…,” Changmin said and then a small smile formed on his face. He was happy that his snide remarks at least had a positive effect to some degree.
“Anyway, this hike is going to be a long one,” Yoochun stated. “Perhaps you can walk beside Jaejoong and carry his bag or something.”
Changmin’s smile faded instantly. “I have to carry two bags up the mountain?” he asked in disbelief.
“If you want Jaejoong to start loving you instead of hating you, you’re going to be carrying his bag.”
Changmin sighed as Yoochun left to go see Junsu. He looked at Jaejoong who was lifting up his big bag that was filled with a bunch of crap that he really did not need and then looked at the giant mountain ahead of him. He really was going to die for this love he had.
