So.. I guess I'm not doing the Lake Oswego Hunt Club summer lessons. My farrier shoes all the horses at the Hunter/Jumper barns in the area, and he said that the trainer of the classes I would be taking is second rate, and on the verge of being fired. Apparently, L.O.H.C. isn't want it used to be; now they're into what's called "Natural Horsemanship". It's a popular method of training, but is rarely used or respected by professionals. I thought it wouldn't be such a big deal, but a woman that boards at L.O. was bucked off of HER own horse, so she went over to jerk him on the reins (which is a common form of punishment). One of the natural horsemanship people saw it, called the humane association and took a lawsuit on her. She said that she wouldn't have been bucked off if she had a good relationship with her horse, which is completely ridiculous. (A kid may have a good relationship with his parents, but still misbehave.) Now THAT is scary.

I guess I should have connected it. The horse I rode at L.O. hadn't been shaved, so I said casually, "Oh, she has whiskers." The girl said that she didn't like being shaved. (They let the horse get away with it.) If you're running a good horse facility, all your horses get shaved once a week, regardless of whether they like it or not.

But they did give me a riding crop.

I don't know. I was looking forward to it, especially that I would get to ride with other people my age on a broke horse. But by the end my parents would've dished out over $400 for medicore lessons.

Yet there is another really good facility in Wilsonville, so I may go there. I really need to improve my equitation, I'm not THAT sloppy but it's enough that it needs to be cleaned up.
