The British Invasion

I don't know how it happened, but British entertainment has taken over our house.

It started simply enough, with me borrowing a friend's car. She happens to have satellite radio, and pointed me towards the Beatles channel. Already being a fan, I found myself listening to them to and from work every day. And as anyone who's been reading my journal knows, I've been rereading the Harry Potter series in my spare time, but I hardly think that one musical group and one book series qualifies as an avalanche of British culture.

But then I wasn't taking into account the things my husband likes and talks me into watching. He's big on documentaries and historical films, and lately he's found himself very interested in the royal family. So far we've watched a documentary called The Royal House of Windsor and a movie called The Queen starring Helen Mirren. He also loves to fall asleep to wildlife documentaries, all narrated by an Englishman named David Attenborough, who has a very soothing voice. Still, this wasn't enough to cry, "The British are coming, the British are coming!"

And then came Doctor Who. We have been watching the Doctor pretty much all month, every night after work and all weekend long. I only planned to watch the best seasons of this reboot, but of course my OCD binger husband won't settle for anything less than every episode since the Ninth Doctor from 2005, and now he wants to buy the Doctor Who/Star Trek: TNG crossover, which of course would also star Patrick Stewart. And yes, we also checked out Torchwood. Not bad.

The episode where The Doctor meets William Shakespeare re-sparked my interest in his plays, so I pulled out my giant collection of all his works and jumped right in. So basically, I'm in the car listening to the Beatles, spending my lunch breaks reading Harry Potter, coming home to the Doctor, and spending the night with David Attenborough. And if we ever need a break, we'll just watch more stuff about the Windsors, assuming I'm not buried in the trials of Hamlet or King Lear.

I can't remember the last time I turned on the TV or radio and heard an American accent, or the last time I opened a book and heard an American accent in my head while reading. Funny thing is, I'm not complaining. Your stuff is bloody brilliant ... er, I mean, really great! :)
