FandomSecrets: "Chekov/Scotty"
... is a crack pairing, apparently?
Oh no no no. No.
My two cents on Chekov/Scotty has always been like a friend setting up two friends on a blind date. "They have so much in common! This could work!"
Just because they have no basis in canon (which is also common to reboot Chekov/Sulu, mind, apart from eyesex) doesn't mean anything. TOS canon (unless you're playing the "reboot-timeline-wants-to-fix-itself-must-be-as-close-to-TOS-as-possible" game) is almost irrelevant since Chekov is a whole new, four years older, physics genius instead of four years younger, skirt-chasing prat. It's a case of a previous bromance (Chekov-Sulu) influencing a completely unfounded friendship of a completely different character.
Who's to say that Chekov and Sulu even get on in the reboot? Who's to say that, even if they do, Sulu isn't straight? (I hear mocking laughter here) Who's to say anything? It's fanfiction. Slash fiction. They have similar interests - they're both good (stereotypical) characters - it's perfectly acceptable to slash them, and it's certainly not a crack pairing. A crack pairing would be something like Nero/Pike. "I love you because you slug me." Where it's impossible to consider without a healthy dose of "it's crack, it's okay to accept this as possible for 0.5 seconds.".
(Of course, that's common to all slash pairings, but eh.)
Personally, I like the view, from a novelisation, that TOS!Chekov and Sulu's friendship began after Chekov fucked up his first shift as Navigator by daydreaming instead of concentrating, Scotty (on the bridge) yelled at him, Chekov got angry and kicked his boots around and Sulu came and told him he was overreacting and it was okay to screw up occasionally. I like this because a) it's IC, b) D'awwww Chekov daydreaming and c) Takei could calm raging wildebeests down, it's not too farfetched.
But in XI, there's no way Chekov would daydream. He's very focused.
XI!Chekov: I can do zhat!
TOS!Chekov: Someone can do zhat for me, I will go chaze zhis woman.
Scotty wouldn't call him out, Sulu wouldn't have to comfort him, ergo, TOS!dub-canon irrelevant.
(This is where a Scokov shipper and a Chulu shipper would divide, of course, as my headcanon has Sulu comforting Chekov after the whole "so, Wulcan dude, I totally lost your mom" incident where a Scokover would probably introduce Scotty).
I'm saying all this to show it is NOT crack. Crack would be delusion held back for the purposes of lols, where as, slash fiction is delusion held back for the purposes of gaysex. Two very different things, and very achievable when you think of the differences between TOS and XI Chekov.
On that same thread, anonymous mentioned "everyone expects Chekov and Sulu to be together. They're like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern." So, if anyone wants to reboot Hamlet with Rosenchekov and Guildensulu...
Also - slighty off topic - VTF Star Trek Novelisation, Chekov had to hold back tears at the sight of Vulcan being destroyed? You wanna woobie up your ensign a little more there? Jesus. I mean, fanfiction can do that, but you can't! God, you're nearly canon - please to not be screwing up Chekov characterisation.
Can you imagine TOS!Chekov holding anything back? He'd punch a lieutenant or something. (Unsuccessfully, and he'd break his wrist, but still). I know he's ~sewenteen~ and everything, but shouldn't the serious emotional response come, oh I don't know, AFTER HE KILLS SPOCK'S MOTHER? That book is just... weird. And ZQ's Russian accent sounds like Bartok from Anastasia and now I cannot unhear.
Imma gonna go take a shower now and think about my operation 80 fic. If anyone out there knows Voyager and TOS, drop me a line, I need someone to call this plot idea I have stupid or logical. (I know it's probably the former, but it's worth a shot.)
