Warnings: rather cracky, as above filler mentioned possible dub-con because they're inanimate objects?, and ... does it count as age difference when the rock is obviously rather weathered and the sword isn't that old? But mostly the crack.

Because I do as integral energy tells me to do, apparently, and even though these fills aren't precisely congruent you can't have a "cast me away" without a "take me up" beside it.

The bottom of the lake is lonely. First there was the blacksmith and the other swords in his forge, then there was the boy and the dragon who made Excalibur into what it is, then there was the king who was the wrong king, and then there was the lake. For the first year, it’s just Excalibur and the silt at the bottom of the lake. In the second year, the lady is there, but she ignores it, mostly, only appearing to stare at it sometimes, mouthing a word or two.

The third year is just beginning when the lady appears in a flutter one day, grasping Excalibur’s hilt and towing it to the surface, holding it in the sunshine for the first time in years. She gives it to the boy again, and Excalibur is away, being used in battle again, playing its part in defeating great evil, even if it has to hurt the Cup of Life to do it (Sorry, Excalibur whispers as it whistles through the air, and gets only an annoyed clang in response).

After the battle, Excalibur is wrapped up in cloth again and the boy takes it into the forest. It’s afraid it will be thrown back into the lake, which will start rusting it eventually even if it is a particularly special sword, but instead, after wandering around for a while, the boy stops by a rock in a clearing.

It’s a large rock, sitting right in the sun where Excalibur hasn’t been in years, probably with lots of stories to tell because it may not have gone anywhere but it’s been there a long time, and Excalibur is about to say hello when the boy lifts it up high, and it feels a tingle of magic like it remembers from the dragon’s breath, making it warm.

Before Excalibur can guess what will happen next and the stone can do anything but give it a confused greeting, the boy is plunging the sword deep within the stone, sparks rising where they meet, and Excalibur feels every inch of its blade sing as it’s buried deep.

There’s silence, after, as they both adjust.

Welcome, says the stone after the boy has walked away, leaving Excalibur to be warmed by the sun and kept safe where no one else can steal it.

It won’t be lonely while it waits, this time.

Awww...
I'm not the OP, but this one little prompt has sparked so many thoughtful, creative, lovely little stories that I wish I had!

I love that the stone and the sword welcome each other. I love how they're both a bit lonely. I love the word choices.

Sweet, sweet fic!

(Sorry, Excalibur whispers as it whistles through the air, and gets only an annoyed clang in response).

Welcome, says the stone...

Your crack has left me speechless! I love that Excalibur is sorry to hurt the cup, and that Excalibur wants to be told stories, and that the Stone welcomes Excalibur even though they hadn't been properly introduced or anything...

*practically crying over how lovely this is*
